?Nathan please, please. I begging you, don?t go.? Rael?s hard gaze did not even flicker in sympathy for his mother?s tears. She didn?t understand. She thought he would die if he went, but he would die if he didn?t.
?For the last time, I?m Rael. Not Nathan. And I?m not your little boy anymore, Mother.? He made sure his face echoed the nasty tone when he said that word. As far as the GlowWyrms were concerned he had no parents. They were the only family any of them would ever need. Some would call them a Gang, and he supposed they would be right. But Rael did not think of it as a gang so much as a band of brothers. And last night one of his brothers were put in the hospital with a bullet in the stomach, courtesy a rival band. The Stone Cold Stoners. There would be no mercy for them. They had a silly name anyways. He stepped out of the door without so much as a ?goodbye?.
A half hour later he strolled into the ghetto?s cemetery tucking something in his waistband. The two gangs had decided this was the fitting place to end each other?s lives. Rael pulled out a cell phone, top of the line and the only thing he ever owned worth anything, and punched some numbers in the pad.
?Big Boss, where is everyone?? It was strange for him to be the first one at the meeting. The recognizable click of a gun sounded by his ear and he felt the cool touch of steel through the shaggy hair on the back of his head. A voice he assumed belonged to the owner of the gun hissed out.
?You tell him everything?s fine kid, and maybe you?ll live.? His heart skipped a couple beats. A set up. That why no one else was hear yet. They got jumped too. The funny thing was though; he couldn?t call for help if he wanted too. There was nothing but static on the other end.
?I-I-Its just static?
?You fucking liar. Tell him.? There was no point in arguing. This can?t be real.. Let this be a dream. Let me wake up at home? anywhere , somewhere! He would just have to pretend to talk to the Boss, then maybe he would escape. When he opened his mouth however, the static suddenly exploded into a flurry of beeps and whirs. If he had ever had the money for the internet, or a computer for that matter, he would recognize it as something akin to the sound of a modem connecting to it. It was freakishly loud, so loud he jerked his head from the ear piece. His vision burst into a flurry of light, and through the impossible loud sound his cell phone was making he though he could hear gunshots. Is what dieing is like, he wondered. For a few brief moments he felt weightless, like a cloud on a breezy day. Then, like something out of a road runner cartoon he looked down and plummeted.
His fall met a very squishy end. Smelly too. When he finally opened his eyes they were met with the very depressing sight of endless swamp.
?This doesn?t look like heaven. Or hell for that matter.? He felt his cell phone still in his palm. Maybe he could call Big Boss and actually get through this time. He always knew what was up. But when he raised the phone he found it was no phone at all. It was a small device, white and tannish yellow. He looked up in confusion and was hit by a pink blur. A sense of disgust flashed in his mind as he felt his back squish into the slime, but was chased out as soon as he saw what knocked him over. It was pink but with a face that made it obvious that it was no angle. With a yell of surprise he shoved the creature off his chest and struggled to his feet. He reached for the gun in his waist band but found only air. Mumbling incoherently Rael slowly backed away as the thing stared at him with a smile.
?Welcome, Nathan, to the digital world!? It shocked him that the thing spoke, but even more that it knew his real name.
?Er? Rael. I?m Rael. I haven?t been Nathan for while?? The pink ball opened its irregular mouth to say something but froze. A sound echoed from behind it that seemed to startle it greatly.
?Nath? Rael, whoever! Come on! We have to run!? The little monster jumped into his arms, and despite himself Rael held on, and ran.
?What? the hell? is going on!? he panted with the effort of tracking though the sludge as fast as possible.
?You?re in the digital world, Rael. I?m your digimon partner. Call me Koromon. This is a tough place, but together we might last at least a month or two before being deleted!?
?Deleted!?? he gasped between breaths, ?Tell me that?s not the same as dieing!?
?Dieing?? Koromon muttered. Rael groaned. This had better be a dream.
