Basically (at least with the pre-show one) the producers and such interpreted their fan's reactions for each player. Depending on what they did or how they acted, people started to pull for that character. It eventually creates a measurable reading which translates into your popularity rating. It's like a gauge to see how strong your fanbase is. Sort of.
