A wry smile crossed his face, which made Bra a little uncomfortable about what she had said.
?Just a courtesy, nothing more,? he shrugged. Then the smile vanished, and his face turned hard. ?No identity of your own? Kind of like being called Kakarotto all the time, isn?t it? And when they look into your eyes, they?re not staring into your soul, because they don?t even see you. They look right past you into the eyes of someone else. You might as well not even exist.?
Silence ensued, and the girl swallowed, eyes wavering. A moment passed to let the words fully sink in.
The roughness of his expression faded. ?Bra it is,? he concluded with a nod of his head. Her discomfort was mitigated, and she gazed at his face once more. ?Listen: whatever is bothering you,? Bar gestured with his chin back to their old campsite, ?you?d better suck it up, woman, ?cause this ain?t the place for that.?
She started to say something, but he interrupted, shaking his head, almost angry. ?No. People die. It hurts. Nothing can change that.?
?I won?t let them die.?
The statement was made with such ferocity that it left the older silent. Bardock clenched his jaw. It?s not as easy as that?
?Then that?s your reason to fight,? he finally replied, his gruff voice a serious tone. ?In this world, in the fighter?s playground, strength is all that matters. Find yours, and you can?t lose. It?s as simple as that.?
She considered the words carefully. How she was doing so, remained a mystery to the male.
?You think too much,? he grumbled, grabbing her forehead with his palm and shaking her head. When he withdrew his hand, he added, ?Just do what comes naturally, and the rest will follow. You?ll be fine.? The saiya-jin smirked, a grin that always seemed to be arrogant.
Giving advice wasn?t really his thing. His general comforting speech was along the lines of, ?suck it up and take it like a man.? Unfortunately, that wasn?t a universal philosophy. Adapting to different people was tough. But it was good practice. This unit needed to be a well-oiled machine. Suddenly, he violently pushed Bra, sending the demi-saiyan stumbling backwards. She glared at him angrily, a little startled as well.
?What the hell did you do that for?!? she growled. Bardock dropped into a ready stance, gesturing for a come on with both hands.
?When life pushes, push back. So come on?push me back,? he dared, almost threateningly.
She needed no second bidding. With a whirlwind of force, she lunged forward and shoved Bardock backwards, sending him slamming into a tree. His back cracked against the wood, splitting the trunk vertically. His teeth clicked sharply. She was a lot stronger than she looked.
Raditzu, seeing the spectacle, called over, ?What?s the matter? Getting beat up, old man??
?Shut up!? Bardock snapped, recovering. He looked back at Bra. ?And that?s all there is to it.?
He adjusted the strap to his duffel. ?I got you covered.? Bardock smiled mischievously. ?Til I have to kill you, that is.?
