Do you own a PSP?
If so, check out the Untold Legends (the first one, mind you) multiplayer. I've played it with three other people and, let me tell you, the lag can get nasty with everyone using their skills, or when encountering a decent sized group of enemies.
Also, while working on this, make sure to keep screen size in mind. Players need to be able to see themselves, their enemies, their allies, and information such as HP/MP/XP at the same time. Additionally, for a class such as a healer/buffer, they need to have an easy way of identifying the status and livihood of their party members.
Its a cool idea, but it will be very hard to cut everything down to a level that current handhelds can handle, and still retain the level of depth that will keep people wanting to play.
That aside, I'll be honest with you: I don't think a game can be designed properly that would make me want to pay a monthly fee to pay it on a handheld.
