Another fit of coughing bent Garlic over to his knees. The whole goddamned unit stopped moving. That?s the problem with being in charge, the biggest problem. You have to appear to be 100% at all times, or nothing fuckin? works.
?Sir!? One of his corporals moved in to help him.
?You keep your hands away from me!? he gasped. ?Get this fucking unit moving Paragus!? He was angry. Pissed off you might say. Livid. He was irritated at his piece of shit body for getting a cold now of all times. But the clink of weapons and equipment moving all around him eased the pain both in his chest and mind somewhat.
?Sir! Let me look at you.? A medic knelt down beside him. The same one that did the last time this happened. A scruffy red-eyed youth he didn?t care to get a name off of, but he had taken to calling Doogie Houser.
?What did I tell you Doogie?? Garlic?s voice came thick through the mucus in his lungs and throat. A finger jabbed him in the chest.
?Any pain??
?No.? Another hack and a wince didn?t exactly add to his credibility.
?Garlic, sir, let my outfit take a look at you. You might have the start of pleurisy, among other symptoms.? The little man shook his head vehemently. He grabbed tight to the medics shirt and pulled himself up, despite it feeling like moving in molasses.
?What do you think that would look like,? he hissed. Doogie looked into his commanders narrowed eyes but didn?t answer. ?I?ll tell you what. It?d look like I?m weak. Ask any bastard out there what they would think f it, and they would tell you it was no big deal, that it happens to the best of us. Ha!? He paused for another string of coughs to pass though, and continued slightly winded. ?But its what?s in their hearts that matters. Movement will slow? silence? will spread around the fires. Moral will plummet. So in short?I?d look weak. If I?m weak, this whole army is weak. I can?t let that? let that happen.? He froze another fit in his chest. He couldn?t show weakness that way either. Couldn?t even cough. Sneeze.
?With all the respect you deserve, Garlic, I think that?s bullshit.? Doogie grinned and let the goblin use his pant leg for support as they continued to walk with the unit. ?We will fail if you?re too sick to move later. Bravery is commendable, sir, but there is a difference between that and foolhardy. You?re best to us in top shape. Actually in top shape, not acting like it.? Garlic turned his head away, effectively nulling the argument. He refused to be treated for anything other than battle wounds. Anything else is weakness.
?Is it too far fetched to think someone is weak if they hide from their faults?? Doogie muttered, seemingly to no one in particular. Garlic let go of his medic and determinedly walked away.
