?We?re dead, huh?? The words left Ham?s mouth though a quivering jaw. Garlic glanced at the private and smiled.
?Probably.? Garlic snapped his telescope open with a flick of the wrist. The approaching Dante lines had to have been the sweetest thing he saw this whole competition. Well over twice his own size they represented his most favorable battle conditions. Suicide. ?But don?t worry private Ham. If we lose their victory will be a Pyrrhic one.?
?When we lose you mean.? Garlic heard the boy?s sullen voice and had to laugh. From shitting his pants to sulking in oh-point-five seconds.
?Well I didn?t call you over to be a negative nancy now did I??
?What did you call me over for.? There was a hint of there anger now. ?What can we do at this point. They?ll hit us in?? His voice was lost in the geysers of dirt erupting around him.
The holy fires will fall
From the stars.
Garlic looked up at the golden angel?s cloud of energy, falling down without prejudice or impunity. He spoke in a whisper that, to his mind, tore through the explosions and screams, but fell flat in there air. ?This is why.?
Birds will carry the embers in their beaks
To the tulip chalice ?
The dante lines seemed to take the rain of death as the blast of a horn. They charged! With such ferocity too!
?And we?ll match them!? Garlic Junior roared. It was a voice deeper and more beastile than any of his men had heard before. Ham himself, crouched on the ground, looked up through tear ringed eyes and saw a mountain. No? Garlic had become something much more majestic. Their once tiny commander was now something out of hell itself. Satan?s field marshall, Beelzebub?s captain. The demon lowered one of his gorilla arms and lifted Ham up to his level. They both completely ignored the end of the energy barrage.
To my sung-out soul.
You divide your treasures,
?If I die today. You will live. Tell Broli? Thanks.? Garlic dropped him and ran out to the front lines. Doubt and tears at his back he brought to this battle a sledgehammer. Not one of metal and wood, but one of pure conviction. His will alone would shatter them.
?When you die.? Ham whispered as the beast left. This was said neither in fear nor depression. Anger or regret. It was said with pride.
Galic?s hands worked independently on the Dante troops, ripping throats and heads clean from their useless bodies. If his men were unsure they saw in him a glimmer, however vastly faint, of hope. In battle that?s all you really need. But deep inside the monster?s mind his troops did not exist. There was only one thing that concerned him?
I rock in joy
On a reeling wave.
?War!?
