Turles, I think you have some misunderstandings regarding Toriyama.
Originally, he planned Dragonball to be a humorous series with only slight amount of fighting. This is quite evident from the loads of humor (or at least attempted humor) included within the original show. However, due to fan demand, the series started to lean more and more towards fighting. It still retained some of it`s original pourpose till the end. I guess that`s probably why it was never a big hit in the US.
Then came Dragonball Z. This too was something Toriyama planned (since he wanted to differs Goku`s childhood and adulthood), but he never planned it to go beyong the Frieza saga. He originally wanted to make Goku sacrifice himself in order to save the universe. Another indication of this is that early discussions about the Super Saiyan indicate there is supposed to be only one. But of course, the fans wanted more. But this also caused Toriyama to start slowly distancing himself from the Dragonball series. All up till DBGT where he only supervised the project.
Personally, I can`t really blame Toriyama for becoming and less and less involved. The Dragonball series had grown into a monster whos intention was completely diffrent from what he originally planned. Heck, they guy made his own parody of DBZ.
We`ll see how Blue Dragon workes out. However, I expect it will contain lots of humor, which is usually standard for Toriyama`s work.
I didn't know all that, I always thought he had it planned out to go to GT then just sold it off or left.
