Day One: Afternoon
#18
Gokua took a step forward through the darkness; another step; another step. As he walked all he could think was: If someone?s in here, they?re more fucked than I. I can barely see in sunlight.

His palms began to sweat, and profusely, drowning the spork firmly gripped in his right hand perspiration. He wiped the sweat away in his left palm with his four fingers of his left palm?as best he could. He continued to step further into what appeared to be an abyss.

He took another step. BANG! His shin smashed into some unknown object. Gokua grunted like a wounded animal and brought his left hand down to aid his left shin. He caressed it with his rough warrior hand and then brought it back to his side, taking another step forward. BANG! He ran into a wall; face first. He shoved the spork back into his pocket and felt the wall with both hands, searching for that fucking switch. His hands navigated blindly in opposite directions, making sure that every area had been touched by his rough fingertips. His right index finger gently bumped into something. He felt around it. It was the switch. He flicked it upward.

The room instantly illuminated. Gokua turned around to see where the hell he was. He was in a survival store. Typical muse heads were mounted in ever corner of the store, high up; the wallpaper was of unauthentic logging; the floor was bare wood, shined over hundreds of times to blanket the scuffs and scrapes. About five aisles of shelves with helpful equipment were to his right in a few rows, and to his left was the counter; behind that was a glass shield which protected various firearms.

Fuck yes.

He went to the first aisle of the small store, searching for whatever could be of use. Only a quarter of the way down the aisle or so (Hard to tell actual distances with two fucked up eyes) was an entire section dedicated to flashlights; left to right?small to large. The swordsman removed his backpack and examined the size; it was large enough to carry a medium sized flashlight and still have some room for other equipment. His eyes locked onto the medium flashlights. Randomly, he snatched one from its resting (A BELL flashlight that was yellow with the letters BELL in black) and stuffed it into the large compartment in his backpack. It needed batteries, and luckily, the store carried them; they were on the opposite side of the flashlights. He turned around and grabbed a few packets of DD batteries, shoving them into one of the smaller compartments.

Nothing he required was left in that aisle, so he ventured through the next.

The aisle he entered was the food aisle; it had everything an experienced camper needed?bread, water canteens, canned food for rations, everything. He made haste, grabbing food?mostly canned food?and a few canteens, stuffing them all into his backpack.

There was only one thing left to grab?a firearm. He left the aisle and walked towards the ironwood counter at the front of the store.

The television mounted above the firearm shelves then turned on. The sandpaper scraping sound returned, and the screen was perplexed with random showings of gray, black, and white, in sporadic inconsistency. Gokua ceased, and looked up at the television.

The picture finally came in.

?Welcome, to Fox 45: News at Noon,? a voice said. ?Now, with our anchorman, Snuff McCoy!?

The camera zoomed in on he blurred figure (Since that?s all Gokua could actually visualize) behind an orange counter that curved in the middle.

?Good day universe!? the anchorman said. ?We bring you the latest of Dante?s Abyss.? His voice was enthusiastic, free, deceiving.

The anchorman seemed to have corn colored hair and pallid skin. That?s all the swordsman could make out.

?The host of Dante?s Abyss, Jak Karl, has announced the deaths thus far?Grampa Gohan, Android 15, Warren Peace, Minoshia, Bulma, and Paige.?

Gokua knew none of them.

?Also, he announced the forbidden zones for right now?C-5 and D-8?

C-5. Gokua was on C-5.

Shit! Gokua thought to himself. His eyes darted from left to right?up to down. His facial expression showed fear, panic. He seemed like a drug addict who was told that he was being forced to go cold turkey. He wanted the firearms in the store but there was no time. He needed to fucking move, and fast. He bolted forward to the doorway with incredible speed, almost gliding over the wooden staircase as he escaped, landing on the brutal pavement, rolling a few times before recovering and standing to his feet.
