You could have it so that there's a dome-shaped barrier surrounding the whole island, so you can't fly too high. If that was the case you wouldn't be able to fly way, way up to see the whole island, but you could still fly between destinations and such. I'm pretty sure the island is massive, 20, so it still would take ages to traverse.
