I guess 'awful' is a strong word. More like 'mediocre'. The series was getting pretty stale at 3, I thought, and with these additions it seemed like they had completely run out of ideas. I wasn't going to buy a sequel unless it added something significant, but it seems they've actually done that.

The skill system they added is completely unlike anything they've ever done before. The Soul Gauge is system is a little reminiscent of the old Weapon Gauge system they used in Soul Edge, but there's no weapon destruction.

Also, they no longer have the unique fighting styles for custom characters like they did in Soul Caliber 3. So no "Monk" or "Barbarian" or "Dancer." You just attach them to one of the already existing character's move sets. I have absolutely no problem with that, but if you were really into the custom characters from SC3, I could see how that would make you sadface.
