Try to not expand too fast and when picking what planets to colonize look for spice colors you don't have. Purple, blue and pink spice are the most valuable.

When you find a new empire do a mission for them and then you will be able to ally with them. Then you can ask them to lend a ship to your fleet which helps big time in combat.

The only weapons you really need are the proton missiles and the auto blasters.

So basically to start you collect spice and take it to planets that don't produce that same color of spice and sell it. Then you upgrade your colonies to produce more spice and have more defense. Check your badges and try to complete the objectives to unlock more items and more things to help you.

When your planets are under attack, save them! Even with tons of defense you and your ally ships being there makes a huge difference.

Once you get high enough badge rank you can get reusable terraforming tools and upgrade the T-score of your planets in order to add more colonies. Also, other empires like it when you up the T-score on their planet. Easy way to earn favor with people.

Buy as much interstellar drive as you can but try not to leave your starting area til you have Uber Turrets on your planets because if you get too far out you can lose colonies while away.

Set up trade routes with planets that have exotic colors of spice (purple/blue/pink) and your planet that is linked will give you free spice of that color. This does lower the price that your colonies will pay for that color though.

You basically just need to get a foothold to start, and a ton of cash. I went around and bought any spice I could if it was less than $5,000 and then just sold any spice if it sold for more than $10,000. I pretty easily was into the millions and with 6 planets just went back and forth collecting their spice and searching for a good price and after 30 minutes had $20,000,000 sporebucks.
