When I was learning to draw books did not help me at all. It's better to have someone sit down and show you. Or, if you don't have any to teach you, I learned a lot by just staring at pictures of things for a really long time and figuring out things like shadows and symmetry. Start out drawing random objects around you, just like quick sketches, then work on shadows, etc.
