I guess my description of my second tech wasn't very clear. It basically digs a pit, yeah. Imagine a cylinder that's shoulder width (plus, say, an inch or so) extending straight below you. That's basically what it does. Then it magically covers the hole. An elevator kind of effect. That's why there would be enough room to move.

See, if it involves magically manipulating the earth then it'll have to use earth chakra manipulation. Naruto just dug through the earth with his bare hands because of demon power hax. I can't think of any examples where chakra is used to manipulate the earth without involving earth manipulation.

However, I'm still wondering if someone who wanted to take a fire jutsu, for example, would be required to have Fire Manipulation.

Yeah, it would. You have to learn how to turn your chakra into fire before you can turn your chakra into fire. :B
