Age of Conan.

Yeah, was primarily stating my position, especially since I'd likely be buying two copies of it to play with Erin as well.

About the open world thing, I'm conflicted on my opinion of that. I openly accepted the WoW approach of really making the world stand out by a seamless transition, however I do not deny the help of a zone created world either. I think WoW accomplishes it with a constant rendering of an area a specific distance surrounding you, but /shrug.

Yeah, that's basically how open-worlds work.

They said they wanted to be able to have tons of detail in each zone, which would make streaming not work really well.

I really liked the way they handled zones in City of Heroes, so I'm hoping it works out just as well for Conan. I, personally, have never really felt that loading screens break immersion; I know some people very strongly disagree, though.

EDIT: And having played Vanguard from launch, I definitely know how open-world can not work well. They got it ironed out eventually, but it was pretty brutal for a while.

Prepatched install is 13.4gb, just for anyone who needs to free up space.

The zones sound like they'll work out pretty well. I also heard that the tutorial island has the option to play it single player if you want.

I'm not sure how obtaining arbitrary 'badges' from every boss - which have no place in lore and make no sense - and then turning them in at set 'prices' at Badge *vendors* - which must be some guild of ex-Boy Scout leaders - is conducive to immersion, either.

Neither Conan or WoW are immersive by zone design. There are plenty of ways to fuck up a player's sense of immersion way worse. See: badge vendors. Heroic Mode. etc.

I wish all MMO's had the option for single player tutorial zone, if anyone played an MMO on opening day, they'd know how annoying it is with hundreds/thousands all at one spot. XD

I'm not complaining over an immersion factor, just how much load screens irritate me.

Oh. Historically, that's been the reason loading screens irritate people.

I've never had a problem with them.

I do, however, have a problem with watching them for longer than I was playing the game. Damn you Sonic the Hedgehog!!!

I'll be honest, I even get annoyed with the loading screen entering an instance in wow. I think because you can't even type to your guild or read or anything. That and Erin's completely onboard video non-gaming computer loads up 3x faster than mine.

I think the latter would annoy me more than the former. Usually, I'm glad to have a nice break from having to watch chat, and look out for mobs, and type, and blah blah blah.

What kind of server do we want to play?

Normal?
PvP?
RP?

There are some people from AD that want to play on an RP-PvP server.

I'm willing to try a PvP server, but it sounds like it'll be set up like the L2 PvP servers, and I'm fairly opposed to random ganking.

My natural inclination would be to go with Normal, but I guess I don't really care in the end.

Well, I arranged to pick up an old comp tomorrow. It may or may not run on it, but I still might get my good one going before its release.
Regardless I never played on anything but a normal server before so I don't really care.

If I were to ever get this game, which I intend to, I would like to play PVP-RP.
Greg0rz (3:16:14 PM): if you cut Michael Moore, he would bleed cheese and bacon grease?
UltimoDemon (3:16:26 PM): I think that is very likely, yes.
Greg0rz (3:16:34 PM): *scribbles down*
Greg0rz (3:16:45 PM): do you mind if I quote you?
UltimoDemon (3:16:49 PM): Not at all.

I never really paid much attention to this, but if I do get it you'd better believe I'm being a Tempest of Set. I wanted to be a Shaman on WoW without that melee bullcrap that shamans never had in WC3 >=o

That or a purely offensive caster, since it's nice to not feel bad that you're not using your MP to heal. It's all fair and well to choose a magic hybrid, until you get put into a group and assigned healing duties anyway.

PvP-RP would be my gut choice, but I don't know a whole lot about the game yet.

I'm not so sure about a PvP server myself. The normal servers are still going to have seige, drunken brawling and all the other PvP games but just won't have the ability to kill everyone you come in contact with. It sounds like it's going to be fairly easy to just camp outside of towns at 80 and slaughter anyone who is coming or going. I'd be willing to try PvP servers but if it ends up being all griefing I'll probably switch.

As to RP, I won't be roleplaying in game so I don't care either way.

I'm not too fussed. If I end up getting the game I'll just join whatever the consensus is.

The only PvP server I've ever rolled on was in WoW, and WoW world PvP went from being 'nifty' to 'fucking gank gank gank gank'. So yeah. I'm not all that interested in a PvP server, so long as I can still siege my ass off on PvE.

You should be able to find enough people to siege no matter what server you're own. I share Waff and Belle's opinions on PvP servers.

EDIT: The only "pure" offensive spellcaster is the Demonologist. Though the Necro sounds like they have some great team-based abilities as well as their offensive spells.

Apparently Necros can spec to have their pets inflict an attack power debuff on every enemy they hit.

That's sexu.
