Everyone I know LOVES this game, including me.
..Until the space phase, where it gets disproportionately harder than the previous phases, with no explanation of how the combat works, or how to go about interacting with other space going races.
I really had high hopes for the space phase... but I just don't like it.

Yeah, it gets harder as you go.
I really like Space Stage, and I'm playing on Normal not Easy.
GUESS YOU JUST SUCK.

I can post up my achievements of clearing all the stages (bar space) on hard, if you like.
I could easily load the game on a lower difficulty setting, but I would have to either re-play every stage for the bonuses, or abandon all my current progress and jump to the space stage.
I've opted to do neither and play War Online instead.
I GUESS YOU JUST LOST THE GAME.

After playing WoW for so long, I can only assume people are burned out on it.
For example my character was really enjoyable, up until about two weeks ago, when I realized I had been doing the same bloody thing for the last three years of my life.
So I unsubscribed and tried to get back into roleplay. >->'
Thus far, I signed up, but haven't managed any posts. ^_^'''

Yeah, Asado is still about 50 and I'd like to have someone to play with. I just started an Undead Priest yesterday. Having fun with that.

I still play WoW, and I'm playing Spore. Doing the civilization part, but finding it hard even on easy cuz I've never played a game like this before.

The creature phase is the best phase for me. I thought I'd love the space stage, but its a lot more shallow than I thought, which is a description of the game in general I guess.

Yeah, it's kinda disappointing that the cell and creature stages are over so quickly. I loved running around, getting DNA points from eating other creatures and tricking out my creature.

Anybody have any tips or tricks for Space stage? I'm just not very good at it, or I don't understand it properly

Its not that your not very good. It gets too hard too fast and its badly explained.
I have yet to find a person who understands how to play the space stage, without just sitting there for hours, using trail and error. =/
The best advice I got, was to just follow what the quests tell you. That didn't end up working out for me, however it'll probably work out for you. I'm not a lucky guy.

Try to not expand too fast and when picking what planets to colonize look for spice colors you don't have. Purple, blue and pink spice are the most valuable.
When you find a new empire do a mission for them and then you will be able to ally with them. Then you can ask them to lend a ship to your fleet which helps big time in combat.
The only weapons you really need are the proton missiles and the auto blasters.
So basically to start you collect spice and take it to planets that don't produce that same color of spice and sell it. Then you upgrade your colonies to produce more spice and have more defense. Check your badges and try to complete the objectives to unlock more items and more things to help you.
When your planets are under attack, save them! Even with tons of defense you and your ally ships being there makes a huge difference.
Once you get high enough badge rank you can get reusable terraforming tools and upgrade the T-score of your planets in order to add more colonies. Also, other empires like it when you up the T-score on their planet. Easy way to earn favor with people.
Buy as much interstellar drive as you can but try not to leave your starting area til you have Uber Turrets on your planets because if you get too far out you can lose colonies while away.
Set up trade routes with planets that have exotic colors of spice (purple/blue/pink) and your planet that is linked will give you free spice of that color. This does lower the price that your colonies will pay for that color though.
You basically just need to get a foothold to start, and a ton of cash. I went around and bought any spice I could if it was less than $5,000 and then just sold any spice if it sold for more than $10,000. I pretty easily was into the millions and with 6 planets just went back and forth collecting their spice and searching for a good price and after 30 minutes had $20,000,000 sporebucks.
Lemme know if you have any questions though.

I've been in France the last few days, so I haven't been able to play it, but I'm just starting the Civilization stage. I thought the creature stage was really fun, but once I got to tribes the magic kind of left without the ability to continue evolving physically.

What are you guys' system specs? I'm wondering if I could play it with more RAM (2GB max, damn 32 bit Vista). I have a C2D 1.6GHZ cpu, 1 gig RAM, and an intel gma x3100. The Creature Creator worked OK, until I spawned multiple creatures, at which point it lagged. I imagine the game itself would be 3 times as bad as that, so I'm worried.

The only time I found the game "challenging" was at the beginning of the space stage.
My people, the Chaktul, were intensely war-like. I guess we got a bad reputation or something, because it only took like 10 minutes for my gruff race to (somehow) provoke a war with two neighboring empires. The two unoccupied systems that I HAD taken were swiftly devoured, leaving me with just my home system.
Desperate after being assaulted like every few minutes, they took to the stars, sweeping past the blockade that had formed around their home and into unexplored space. There they met with a sentient race of quadruped, cowboy-hat wearing cacti who were more interested in Sporebucks than anything else the universe had to offer. They didn't particularly care that the Chaktul thought they were the universe's destined rulers. Despite enormous public controversy, an alliance with the cacti swiftly solidified, giving the Chaktul, for the first time in its entire history, an ally in its endless struggle for survival.
As the Cacti expanded their mercantile empire, the Chaktul recruited them to raid its enemy's back lines. It was in one of these skirmishes that the Chaktul discovered an amiable race of helmet-wearing velociraptor scientists. By allying with them, the Chaktul were able to encircle their enemy and wage against them a brutal war of attrition.
Slowly progress was made. The Empire first reclaimed its two lost systems and the valuable spice mines they contained. As system after system fell before the renewed might of the Chaktul and its alliance, the two enemies turned on each other.
New weapons were brought to bear. The Cacti proved an invaluable member of the Chaktul fleet, their sophisticated weaponry slicing through dozens of enemy fighters. The face of the war changed once the Chaktul managed to develop a working antimatter bomb.
Striking with the vicious swiftness that had secured their cavemen forebears dominance of the planet, the Chaktul wasted no time in deploying this new weapon en masse. Entire cities disappeared in the blink of an eye.
Broken, defeated, their enemies offered their surrender, but the Chaktul were merciless. They, for once, had not started the war they were in, and the vengeance that they wrought against their enemy was terrible to behold. Every member of the target races was hunted down and executed. The Cacti and Scientists moved to fill most of the gaps left by the previous empires.
It was here that the Chaktul had to make a decision. With their technology firmly established and their fleet bolstered, they were no longer the infant civilization that had ventured from their home. They were quite capable of engaging their previous allies in a fight for control of the sector, and also fairly certain that they could win. The Cacti, for as vast as their empire had grown during the war, was stretched thin. They seemed more interested in laying claim to as many systems as possible rather than firmly establishing their presence in each.
Again, however, the Chaktul turned from their hard-wired need for violence. The Cacti and Scientists had come to their aid when the need was most dire. They each also offered specialty goods in their markets that the Chaktul did not have access to.
And so, turning their engines away from the front lines of their allies, the mighty Chaktul turned their course towards the other end of their arm of the Galaxy.
... And that's pretty much where the real 'story' of my civilization stops being interesting. By that point my ship was so ridiculously powerful that I didn't NEED a fleet to capture planets - I could just go in and drop one bomb on a city (not even an antimatter bomb, I'm talking my normal bomb) and have it surrender. I crushed like 4 empires before I realized it had gotten really, REALLY boring.

D CPU 3.4 GHz, 1 Gig of ram, some shitty graphics card. The only slowdown I have is in the editor.
