Bra Wrote:That said, for a machine as 'omnipotent' as a PS3, why would a crappy game like - for example - Jericho bog down to 13 fps on only the Sony port?

I thought we went over this? They develop on a language that compiles (Cg, or something similar) to DirectX (Windows based development), 360 takes DirectX without any modifications. Then when they want to port it to PS3, they just compile it as C instead of DirectX and are good to go for the most part...

The problem, however, is that the 360 uses a 3-core processor and the PS3 uses an 8 core processor. In PowerPC based programming the cores will just sit idle if you don't call for them. A 360 game ported directly to PS3 will only be able to utilize 3 cores. Serious modifications must be made to make use of the remaining processing power.

As Rad said, Publishers usually aren't willing to wait for the code to be fixed to fully support the radically different architecture of the PS3. I imagine once it runs "well enough" it's getting shrink wrapped and stuffed into your local Best Buy. A new software development kit was released for the Playstation 3 recently that will allow the opposite to take place; development with the PS3 architecture ported over to DirectX. However, the $10,000 price tag will limit acceptance of that to major studios for now.

Point being, you have to examine each port side-by-side if you really want to see which performs better. Depending how much time was spent optimizing the game to "playable" and which system the development originated on.

Or just not give a shit about the tiny differences and enjoy your game and be glad that the exclusivity of yesteryear has passed. You get to play more games now, stfu!

MGS4. I can't stop thinking about this game, after beating it eight times and getting practically everything. Best damn game I've ever played.

Most people have a poem that sticks with them and informs their life. I'm not being ridiculous when I say that MGS4 is the first game I've ever played that fulfills essentially this same role.
