Psh, grind through Brock with Ember like a man lol. uuuuugh my first playthrough that was terrible. My Brock fights usually wind up with me using level 8ish pokemon and debuffing the living shit out of Onyx. Tail Whip, Metapod using that slow string thing,pidgey throwing teh sand, Charmander using growl and hoping Bide didn't land,because damn was that a cool skill at low levels

/hate Bide.
My first playthrough which I lost (had all but one Pokemon. The Fire version of Eevie) I burned Brock to bits with Ember and beat Misty as well. xD

Elemental weaknesses are playing the game on EZ mode anyway =D Actually using your Wartortle against Surge, yeaaaah. I never manage to solo him with it, but I def get right up to Raichu,who promptly obliterates the poor guy with his TM

Thunder Bolt is one sexy move that's why. So is Bubble Beam. The sound they use in the original game for it still makes me get wood.
I agree. Purposely setting yourself up for failure is awesome. Like beating all the trainers in each gym WITH ONLY ONE POKEMON ALIVE!

Speaking of Surge, that reminds me: Fuck HMs. The moves suck so I always had to specifically catch a "Cut bot" and a "Strength bot" etc. Usually by the end I had one pokemon with 3 or 4 of them I'd tote around just for utility chillin' at whatever level I caught them at. Flash, however, kicks ass and my main Psychic usually had it

You know what? FORGET YOU GUYS AND YOUR PSYCHIC TYPES. Dark is where it's at. Ghost pokes and psychic pokes don't know where to be steppin' once I lay on my Crunch attack.
EDIT: Okay, Raf, I can understand some hate on some HMs, but Flash ain't the only useful HM. A rainy day powered Surf will wreck crap.

I'm also a big fan of ghost Pokés. In the Red/Silver days my Gengar used to wreck shit. In the Ruby days, my Dusclops wrecked shit.

I'm a big fan of using it to fight gyms way the hell early, per my neutering of Onyx to beat Brock. It lets me beat people a good chunk earlier than I should be able to. As for Surf, iirc it had a lot of PP which was the best thing about it. Long After I one-shot 7 pokemon with Hydro Pump, Surf was there for me, chippin' away a quarter at a time
TBH though, after a while I stopped learning flash because I could navigate the caves from memory without it, which was fun

I never took on brock ever unless my starter pokemon had evolved into its second stage...and I never fought surge unless I was in stage 3 of starter.....
Cuz I rolled over surge and all of his in gym trainers with just my blastoise...cuz bite....destroys for some odd reason. But...I have to admit my winning comes from level grinding for hours at a time in one area until my exp barely moves and then i continue until i cant take it anymore lol

Bite is crazy strong, it's why Gyarados kicks so much ass when he evolves, learns it right off the bat. Got even more batshit powerful when it became a Dark move later on, but one of the best Normal skills in the old games.

Well, I agree with John, though I wouldn't put it that way. Psyren, the best approach to Brock (especially if you have a Fire starter, a starter with no type advantage against Rock/Ground Pokemon) is to catch other Pokemon, preferably a Grass Pokemon like Oddish or a Bug Pokemon like Butterfree who have type advantage instead of spending a good hour grinding levels 'til you get a second evolution on your starter.
