Could we have the debate hall back? It'd be nice to be able to have semi-intelligent discussions without having threads in lock-danger at all times.

I'm all for it coming back, as long as you're ok with the fact that staff have the right to step in any debate if it gets out of hand.

Of course.
What I'm primarily hoping for, though, is a general forum where things can be discussed, not just the super-tight and rigid debate rules that were planned awhile ago that caused things to fizzle.

I'm not familiar with the former debate hall. What tight rules were there?

I'm operating off memory here, but I seem to remember that all the debates were set-up by a Staff member, and only a certain amount of people could participate, and they were pre-designated, and blah blah blah
07-30-2008, 08:29 PM
Oh yeah, I remember that now. It was two on two contests or the like. What ruling(s) would you prefere?

I wouldn't be averse to something like that, but my main hope is for a more open forum. There would necessarily need to be rigid rules (in accordance with Chubbs surprising skepticism toward anything resembling a political or religious theme), but they would not so much be on the format and nature of a topic or debating style, but the tone and attitude of the posts themselves.
Thus, there could simply be a Euthanasia thread, where that particular issue is discussed, with no other rule except what applies to any and all threads in the forum. At any rate, I am completely averse to the X vs. X format, as it assumes a polarity on issues that actually have more than one side. If matters are to be addressed with any degree of depth, an intimacy with the subject matter is necessary that simply cannot be approached with a polarized approach.

Not speaking as a staff member here, just as a preface.
But couldn't all of that be done as threads in the Kame House, given that its a forum where we have to expect a certain level of maturity in our discussions and the actual topics are sometimes a bit "touchy" for public access?

I wouldn't mind

I'd suggest making a mature tag thread for a debate and having a test run. Just to see if there is any real interest for it. I'd be happy to make the forum if people are going to post in it.

Reijin Wrote:Not speaking as a staff member here, just as a preface. Kame House is sorely underused. There's only a few people that actually frequent it. Not only that, but there are a number of people under the age of 18 that are mature enough to handle such discussion. In some ways, the Kame House is too restrictive; in others, not enough.

I remember last Debate Hall. I participated in the test debate in that and it all went smoothly and there was a lot of interest. Unfortunately immediately after it was set up that interest seemed to just vanish.
Rules were basically as already stated. Except a warning in the Debate Hall counted double as I recall.

I would not mind a Debate Hall. I very much enjoy discussing various issues. But it would need tight control, perhaps even a dedicated mod. Regardless of their stance, some people do not withhold their emotional attachment to a certain topic and this often leads to flaming. This especially holds true for more recent events.
Plus, debates tend to have dangers that are less frequent in other kinds of discussions, such as flame-baiting. ![]() Sage Wrote:Holy shit. The knives and everything.

And just a heads up, all debates or debatable subjects will need to go into that forum, and not as a single topic in the asylum marked under a mature tag. ![]() Does honesty earn respect or inspire revenge?
