Help me remember this game

There is a really old shooter game that I recall playing as a kid. I'm talking like 10ish. I don't remember the name or any of the names of the character, just that I really liked it.

The storyline was about a big team of soldiers who's plane crashes and they are all forced to skydive out and get separated over a big enemy base. Through the story, they all find each other and fight (or die).

Anybody recall anything like this? I'm sorry if it's vague, but all my hopes of looking it up have failed. I think it was for PS1, but I suppose it might have been PS2. I think it was out before PS2, but again, not 100% sure

Kind of sounds like Winback, which was for the N64 and was remade for the PS2.

I recall playing a game when I was like six, that was like a top-view two dimensional game that took place in a fantasy land where you battled all manner of creatures. It was for SNES, I think, or NES.
