Random Question Grab Bag ! 8DX
#1
1) What's the substantive difference between these two Traits:
Quote:Tenacious
Normally, getting beaten up doesn’t do much for a fighter’s morale. Those with this trait are the exact opposite – when they see death encroaching on the horizon, they just try all the harder for it. Because if you’re gonna lose, you might as well go down in a blaze of glory. And hey, with the extra “boost” there’s always the chance that you’ll pull a surprise win.

Defiant
For some, the challenge of a strong opponent is what unlocks their hidden power. It doesn’t matter that their opponent is stronger, or faster, or smarter, or all of the above, they’re going to give it everything they’ve got and then some. Overwhelming odds is exactly where they shine. Fight the power!
For purposes of writing I can't really tell them apart.

2) Can't find an answer to this using the Search function. The definition of Ki Control is pretty vague.
Quote:Ki Control - 5 XP - The user is able to control the flow of energy inside and around their body, harnessing it into a physical form that not only can be used as a weapon, but also to power up their own bodies. This ability is required to use any externalization of energy.

Power-Up - This technique is granted in tiers, each one multiplying the combat ability of a warrior by a certain amount. These must be purchased in order (ie, you need Tier 1 before you can buy Tier 2).
Using Power-Up's definition as a reference, I assume "power up their own bodies" means that a character can burn ki to temporarily enhance CA. If so, how far does it go percentage-wise? How much does Focus come into play?

I originally designed traits to just give a power boost during a certain situation, not actually represent the character's personality/fighting style (though many make more sense with certain personalities than others) kinda like how Gohan's real potential never really came out unless his friends were in danger. Though the trait rule page says there's no specific stat boosts so I'm not sure what they're supposed to do now IC-wise (it just says they affect fight judgements, so maybe nothing?).

In any case, Tenacious is supposed to be for when your character is beaten up, and Defiant is supposed to be for when you're fighting a stronger opponent (it was gonna be something like, if your opponent is only slightly stronger, the trait doesn't do much, but if they're double your strength, you get the max of 1.5x multiplier).

Again, the rule page is pretty vague so I'm not sure if that's accurate anymore, but that's the idea as I originally posted it on the dev forum.

Well, if a Tenacious character is getting beaten to a pulp it's safe to assume he's fighting a stronger character. If a Defiant character is fighting a stronger character, it's a safe assumption that he's going to get beaten to a pulp. Either method releases the character's "true" power. Just seems like two different ways of getting the same effect.

For Defiant, it's more like the challenge of a strong opponent, and it's going to be there all the way through the fight. For Tenacious, it could be because they've been fighting lots of opponents in succession, or because they're fighting an equal-powered opponent and now they're almost finished.

Of course it CAN work that way, but it can also work in the inverse.

If the Defiant is fighting a row of enemies, and runs into someone who's not usually stronger but since he's tired at this moment it's a tough fight. Doesn't he get a boost in spirit?

What about if the Tenacious fights a terribly stronger opponent? By the wording of the trait's definition I would have to assume he would be able to fight beyond the "normal" limit.

Maybe not, but inquiring minds, etc.

'No' for both, if things are still following the original definitions.

Tenacious - the weaker you get, the harder you fight, basically. You can get beaten up by someone your own strength, or a bunch of people who are all a bit weaker than you.

Defiant - the stronger someone is than you, the harder you'll fight right off the bat. As you become adjusted to how much stronger the opponent is, the "advantage" will wane. Similar to the Efficient trait.

Ki Control can not be used to create a kind of pseudo power-up. It's used to do the more basic stuff like shoot beams, create barrier, have big shiny auras, etc..

Focus has no impact of the efficacy of a power-up.

EDIT: Did that cover it?

The bonuses for Power-Ups are listed in the Technique list. The first tier doubles your CA.

Then what does it mean to "power up their bodies"? If you can't enhance your strength, speed, or physical defense then what is powering up? The skill's description is very misleading.

It assumes, like in DBZ, that you wouldn't just walk around at your maximum ki potential.

Kind of like how Goku's PL sits around 5 even though he could jack it up to over half a million if he wanted to. But, perhaps the description could be worded better.

Yes. I'll change it shortly.

That's intriguing. So that's allowed?

Fighting to the bitter end is an advantage when your opponent does not wish to perish.

So what's allowed? Repressing your maximum strength? *Raises eyebrow*

If that's what you're asking, then yes. We're not going to stop you from making yourself weaker.

So, if you don't have Ki Control then you can't actually use your full CA or max ki or whatever? Or does this just mean that it's some sort of quasi-dark ki thing? This needs further explanation. And I'm still confused about how Focus doesn't come into play: Focus is ki manipulation, and Ki Control is what allows the use of ki. Seems to me that Focus would be rather important. What is ki that's "inside" the body if it doesn't effect your physical stats?

You need Ki Control to externally manifest ki.

EDIT: It's really not complicated. If you want to shoot ki, get Ki Control. If all you do is run around and punch really hard, you don't need it.

EDIT2: I went and changed the description. It should make much more sense now.
