To the Shelter!
Saz Wrote:So is this game really that good?

Yes.

The game isn't fun to watch. There's really not much in it if you if you're not the one playing it.

It is however, tons of fun to play. The world is very well developed with tons of crazy characters and goings-on. There's a mind-boggling number of places to explore and quests to do. There are tons of different ways to make your character with all of the different Perks and such.

It's just a great game.

Yes, it's a very good game and worth owning.

If you liked Oblivion, you'll probably love it. I hated Oblivion personally, but in my opinion it's like Oblivion but without most of the things I hated about it (though one day, I will make a game where good and bad actions aren't represented by a global karma bar) plus an amazing story/world, as others have said.

Pros: The story is solid, and the atmosphere created by the game is quality. The characters present in the game are from a wide range; many comedic, many crazy, most of them convincing and deep. VATS is a fantastic addition to traditional FPS gameplay. The landscape is gorgeous (though not beautiful).

Cons: The gun gameplay, minus VATS, is weak, clunky, and ineffective. There are a number of technical issues that still haven't been solved: Fallout will randomly crash often enough to be a nuisance (roughly once every few days for me), some quests can become broken if a particular situation arises (for example, it can become impossible to take the GOAT if you choose to attack the Tunnel Snakes prior to the test, and take a seat before the others), and various physics quirks, like items vibrating on the ground that shouldn't be. Frame rates (at least on the PS3) can be problematic in areas with a large number of enemies. Another big letdown for the PS3 is a lack of DLC (which will be present for PC and 360).

It's a good game. I'd recommend owning it, but I wouldn't mark it as Game of the Year, which some places are. MGS4, LBP, and Left 4 Dead deserve contention for that spot.

It's never crashed for me, though I'm playing on the 360. But I have had a few other bugs, like once I got stuck in the scenery and had to reload. I think I got off easy.

I've never had it crash or chunk. I've played it on both PS3 and PC.

Maybe I'm just lucky or something.

Some of the game programming is just weird too. For example, *SPOILER* after convincing The Mechanist in the side-quest at Canterbury Commons to give up his fighting and surrender his suit for the sake of the town, he will attack you if you destroy one of the aggressive robots patrolling the area.

I never had a problem with gunplay in real-time. So long as my guns are in decent condition, anyway. lol

It is, however, far more buggy than is acceptable for a game to make it to release. That said, I've - thankfully - never yet encountered anything that 'broke' my game, but people have. I know I have a character in Oblivion who's completed everything including SI and KotN but I can't use him anymore since the game freezes EVERY TIME I try to load the file. >=(

With Bethesda games, always make a backup here and there. You're shooting yourself in the foot if you don't.

Despite this, it's still my best of '08 choice. *Thumb up*

My game has frozen approximately 7 times, and I have accumulated 80 hours between two characters. Not too shabby, as far as I'm concerned.

EDIT: Oh, apparently using the railway rifle significantly increases your crash rate. So, uh, just a head's up. Also it's a lousy weapon anyway. But I do like how it makes the whistle when you shoot. :p

Until you get the dart gun, its the best thing you can use to cripple specific body parts.

The dart gun is bullshit.

I can't stand using it because it makes you invincible. No thank you, deathclaws are supposed to be scary.

EDIT: Besides, I only go for headshots and I am basically guaranteed to cripple the head (how is that possible anyway) if, on the bizarre off-chance, the enemy isn't immediately killed.

Your guns break down with use?

Fighting to the bitter end is an advantage when your opponent does not wish to perish.

Yes. All weapons and armor degrade with use. In the Fallout universe, apparently guns are made of paper mache, so you'll be fixing them frequently. Thankfully, that's not as intrusive as it sounds. Just ridiculously unrealistic.

It's only annoying for the first couple of hours. After that it's just something you do without really thinking about.

I thought it added to the feeling of the game. I mean, nothing in the Fallout world is new - it's all just salvaged from the old days. Eventually, everything is gonna stop working. If anything was unrealistic, I would have thought it was that were still so many working guns =P (not to mention food and ammo)
