Physical strength aided by ki?
#1
With our current system, it's possible for someone to not use ki at all and just be a fighting powerhouse. However, I thought of something that needs clarification.

If I choose someone who uses ki as well as fighting, would that give me stronger hits and take less damage than someone who doesn't use ki?

Ie. A Z fighter could punch through a brick wall with his bare fist and not feel it, whereas someone who knows nothing about ki would end up with a broken fist.

In my opinion? No. Just because someone doesn't use 'ki' as where they get their power doesn't mean they're automatically inferior to you. Androids generally don't have 'ki' (or didn't in the show), but could still tear the shit out of Z-fighters.

I think the official stance is that even if you're not consciously aware of it, ki is the inner energy that gives a person their superhuman strength and speed.

Essentially, through the use of anime logic, everyone can use their own method of being strangely strong.

Maybe, to remove the confusion and stop the debate of "can I use ki to powerup my melee attacks", we should just change Focus to 'Ranged'. If I'm correct, some people were gonna just gonna roleplay their 'ki attacks' as being guns anyway.

Not a big deal either way, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Did we seriously cut down to four stats to get into discussions on it still being complicated and needing to go to two? I mean, I'm all for stat systems like that in some rpgs, but if we drop to those two stats, we may as well throw out stats all together.

Those four stats are primarily there to show a flavor distribution of your abilities to see how you compare in styles to one another. CA is where your fighting ability comes in. The stat distribution is just that, a display of how your said CA is proportioned in terms of strong points and weak points.

EDIT:

I'd probably suggest mostly Agility, with some decent Focus.

I'm sure he meant Strength and Focus, not all four.

No... slow down. All he was saying was that Focus might be better off named Ranged.

Well, to be fair, he edited his entire post to something entirely different than what I responded to.

This is what I originally responded to before he edited for clarification.

Yeah, I edited my post to better get across the idea I was proposing, since I thought the way I'd worded it was a little confusing. Evidently, I was right =P

Yep. Your new wording works great, so don't mind me ;-)

So basically, Focus is just being able to manifest ki, while having 100% Strength (ftw) means that even though you can't shape that ki into tangible things, it's still the reason you can hit so hard.

It means whatever you want it to mean. Maybe you have magic punches. Maybe you're powered by the spirit of a dead ancestor. Maybe you can't externally manifest ki, but because of that, whenever you try it just turns inward, powering you up. Or maybe you're just retard strong through intense training.

In the end, it just means that you can punch like a fucking beast. How you explain it is really up to you, as far as I know.

That's basically the way it works, yeah.

I thought I was the only one being thrown off by the stats. ;O

Focus, Endurance and Agility should be changed to something more direct: I originally thought Endurance actually effected a character's stamina because of the stat's name - and if that were the case then most of the characters would fall over after their first serious attack, especially ones with absurd Focus or Strength. Focus is more than just ranged attacks (ki shield/sword spring to mind), so "ranged" doesn't cover it. Also, the Agility stat is about speed and has little to do with actual agility. With the definitions that the stats currently have these would be better terms:

Strength -
External (Ki) -
Defense -
Speed -

Essentially. Except, the stat names we came up with in the dev forum sound better. =]

Hopefully not, because that's not at all how I spread my stats.

Quote: * Strength – this is your physical attack power. Basically, this determines how hard you can throw a punch, and how much physical punishment you can dish out.

* Focus – this is your ki attack power. This shows how much of a sting your energy attacks cause, and how big of a mark they leave.

* Endurance – this is your defense. Everything from being able to withstand a kick to the gut to how you can hold out against an enemy’s energy blast.

* Agility – this is your movement and attack speed. This covers how quick you can move, how fast you can deal out the pain, and how swiftly you can dodge somebody’s attacks.
