Maybe it's just me, but Xenogears is more reading than anything else. Most of the time so far (about 9 hours) has been walking to this person, cutscene, walking to this person, cutscene, coming back to this person when I'm done "making preparations" (which is always instant because accruing gold is hard and shopping is useless), cutscene, vamp to new location, cutscene, maneuver your way through about 5 minutes worth of jumping, annoying random battles, anti-climactic boss battle, cutscene, save-point, I close the emulator to go get something to eat and contemplate blowing me head out for wasting 2 hours of my life doing, essentially, absolutely nothing.
Does it get better? Or am I just forgetting the rpg concept? I remember Golden Sun having some long dialogue, but at least you could control the text speed, firstly, and there were lengthy adventure portions where you solved puzzles and leveled. Chrono Trigger I remember had a pretty nice pace, and Pokemon? Forgetaboutit! They knew the fucking business, nobody wants to sit through a goddamn virtual book, they want to level and battle with their pokemanz. Xenogears is a lot of story. Later on there definitely is more fighting and what-not, but it takes a while to get there.
If you're looking for something with the same pace as Pokemon, Xenogears is definitely not the game you want to be playing. EDIT: Your comment about walking away having done "nothing" is intriguing, though. At what point is sitting there playing a game actually doing "something"? ![]() "It's on my brain, driving me insane. It's on my mind, all of the time, and if it left... I would be fine."

Good point. Idk though, like Max Payne, throughout that game I blew holes through enough faces where I could save and move on to something else. This, being more story-oriented, is like I'm never really DOING anything.
I'm not really looking for a Pokemon paced game, that was just an example. Mainly because Pokemon, Chrono Trigger, and Golden Sun were the only RPGs I've ever played. I was trying to see if I was just now coming to the realization on what the genre is, or if Xenogears in particular was just pretty wordy. People have come to call RPGs like Xenosaga "JRPGs" and they usually have more dialog/cutscenes/etc..
While I'd probably call Xenosaga a more extreme example, it's not far off. ![]() "It's on my brain, driving me insane. It's on my mind, all of the time, and if it left... I would be fine."

It's funny because I felt I was becoming a fan of the jrpg scene, what with how much I was enjoying Xenogears, and how much I want to play Eternal Sonata. That's pretty much not the case now... but I still wanna play Eternal Sonata. The concept is win, imo.

If anything I really love being on my first day of spring break.
I hate daylight savings time is like right around the corner. I like that I've gotten attention from women I was interested in last semester. I hate I can't really act on the attention I'm getting because of what I'm seeking to obtain with another woman who caught my eye. I like National Security the movie.

Though you'll need a DS for it. ![]() "I would happily blow 20 guys in an alley with bleedy dicks so I could get AIDS then fuck a deer and kill it with my AIDS." - Louis C.K. thanks waff Kaden Wrote:I wish being ten John Does made me feel better than it actually does.

Sage Wrote:Does that make MGS4 a JRPG? Oh no you didn't! Srsly, although I havent played 4, I enjoyed the balance between gameplay and story-time in all the others. 3 especially, but I loved pretty much everything about that game. Max Payne's approach to blending the story in with the game was pretty well done. I know it's a totally completely different style of game, but I enjoyed the fact that I could ignore the television, or the ringing telephone, even though I never did because it never took more than a few seconds. And then I was back to blowing in faces. But the forced dream sequences were annoying, and I hope no other game ever does that ever. If you have a DS, and don't own Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, you need to be slapped upside the head.
