Why not? Are live actors any more real than an animation? They get dressed by other people, wear make-up applied by others, reading scripts that others wrote, showing emotions that they're told to, at times and places they have no control over. They're essentially flesh and bone puppets. I go back to George Lucas' complaint that Frank Oz's Yoda from 1983's The Return of the Jedi is just as valid a candidate for an acting award as anyone else.

Kaden Wrote:I actually think it's pretty fair, since they can't really give Best Actor/Actress awards to performances in animated films.
They were considering it at one point when Gollum melted everyone's face.
But that's kind of different, as the guy did both the motion capture and the voice of the character. I don't really know how that's different, but it's different.

Josh Brolin was easily better than he was.
I daresay even Robert Downey Jr was more deserving.
The Joker is a stock psychopath character, regardless of how well he pulled it off. Characters like that have not and should never win awards, what's even more shameful is that the fact he won is supporting the idiotic style of method acting he pursued.

Holy shit, I didn't know that's who played Bush. I loved him in No Country For Old Men, if I had known that I would have made an effort to watch it.
What role are you talking about in particular?

I saw the highlights last night. The level of smugness in that building was mind blowing. To be fair, most of it was coming from Brangelina. The whole idea of Hollywood kinda irritates me, it's like an elite little club they have.

The performances in Wall•E were more engrossing than the rest of the sociopolitical diatribes in the other movies. I'm just glad that this kind of naked insider-only popularity contest is so largely concentrated in southern California and highschools or I'd probably have to go live in a dirt hut on a mountainside.

"Oscar-winner Sean Penn took a dig at his former wife Madonna when the two crossed paths at an after-show party. The 48-year-old, who won the Best Actor gong for his performance in ''Milk'', was congratulated by the Queen of Pop, who went public with her 22-year-old lover Jesus Luz at the bash after splitting with Guy Ritchie in January.
‘The Sun’ reports, gesturing towards Luz, Penn said: "Thanks. Another kid already?""
I like Sean Penn.

I don't. Don't get me wrong, I think Madona is an aging whore but if what you posted is true then that just validates my comparison between Hollywood and highschools.

Meh. Anybody who ties up Madonna, and hits her over the head with a baseball bat, is good in my book. I'm willing to overlook his douchebag qualities.

In regards to Rod's complaints that animated actors never win best actor/actress, I'm going to have to weasel in my opinion. I act in theatre, although not professionally, and I must say that while I AM very good at manipulating my voice, the real challenge for live actors such as film and theatre actors does come with the physicalization and the externilization. I once had a director sit there for several minutes teaching me how to raise my eyebrows because I had never done it consciously before. I once had to learn how to not use my legs AT ALL for a role. It's tough.

Why would you waste your time responding to that?

I once had a director sit there for several minutes teaching me how to raise my eyebrows because I had never done it consciously before. I once had to learn how to not use my legs AT ALL for a role. It's tough. Animation has its own set of challenges. There's no program or whatever that auto-generates CGI performances. The best of it is done frame by frame, with different programmers doing the hair, another on clothing, others who do facial features. It's so complicated that no one person could animate even one high-quality CGI character for one movie within a reasonable amount of time.
And puppetry is just as difficult. Back in the heyday of cinematic puppetry there were entire studios that did little else but create those things, and they were operational works of art in their own right. Actually making use of them took a whole other team with a whole other set of skills.
Saying that live actors are somehow inherently superior, or that the work is more difficult, is just dumb.

This has to be the most ridiculous thing yet, and you've said some pretty ridiculous shit.

What? That Sean Penn is a tool? Madona is a ragged whore? That Hollywood enables adults to live in a perpetual state of high school for life?
A performance is a performance. Looking down on something for being different is allegedly taboo in leftist communes like Hollywood, but this is just another point that makes these award shows just another opportunity for producers to advertise the movies they paid ungodly amounts of money for while showering a bunch of empty shells masquerading as human beings with trinkets.

I agree about Hollywood, kinda, but to say that Wall-E deserved a nomination along living people that had to express real emotions and spill real blood, is pretty much absurd. A team is responsible for everything Wall-E did, while Mickey Rourke had to rely on whatever was inside himself to pull off that role. That was the whole point of the movie, actually, that the human soul is a special thing and it shouldn't be taken for granted.

I wasn't saying animated films aren't marvels. Wall-E is amazing. Coraline is a work of art. I was responding to the fact that you were implying that the actor who went 'beep boop beep' for Wall-E has the right to be considered for Best Actor, or that Dakota Fanning has the right to be considered for Best Actress for Coraline.
Kaden: I dunno, I just felt like it.

Do you understand the concept of "acting"?

Actually, Wall•E should have won best picture, and it was Yoda from Empire Strikes Back back in 1980 is the one I said should have been nominated for Best Actor. This thread is not that long, I don't understand why I have to explain this.
