Pretty much what Josh said.
Every dragonball fan is expecting a word for word clone of what they saw in the original anime. So they are going to nitpick it to the point of making themselves hate it because liking it would mean they aren't loyal enough.
"They went through the trouble of putting Roshi onto a small island hut in the middle of a lake!" "Yeah, but you can see a city in the background, way to halfass it, THEY DON'T CARE AT ALL"
And when you see someone nitpicking it like this based on rabid anime fanatic reasons, and point it out, the response tends to be "No, even if it wasn't *anime*, it still looks like it would be so horrible omg Japan does everything better, haven't you seen Godzilla?"
I think the movie is going to be decent. Its not going to be an exact replica of what we've already seen. But then, neither was Mortal Kombat. It was a little weird to see Reptile in the manner he was portrayed before infesting a random dead warrior. In fact, I'd say the part that largely killed the second one was the fact that it wasn't even consistent with its own predecessor (The multiple reptiles, wtf did they do, all go infest random green clothing wearing ninjas?). That and cramming every possible character they could into it, as well as turning the armor plastic and putting gloves onto the ninjas and replacing skin peeling animations with tiny explosions (OMG EXPLOSIONS ARE COOL).
Rant aside, let's just hope its more adaptation like Mortal Kombat or even Silent Hill, and less like Super Mario Bros and Street Fighter (the first).
I'm going to just go in and watch it. I'll see the movie, shrug off the unavoidable bitching that will come from pretty much everyone for daring to create a movie that didn't follow everything to the dot, and likely enjoy it because I'm not going in and grumbling as I find my seat with "What does it matter what spot, make sure its close to the door so I can walk out of this fail movie" before the previews are even over.

I didn't mind the Mario movie, when I was a kid. Its entertaining, but I'm using it to show the drastic differences they took.

Also: Mortal Kombat (the first) was probably the best video-game to movie adaptation that there has been, imo.

I said I won't force my opinion on you. But based on the film's novelization, i can say it's close to the source yet is different enough to still be classified as an adaptation, which is what it is. There are somethings that "had to" be changed, but since there's always possibility of sequels, they can always show those later.
I haven't closed my mind yet. I still have hope, and I'm damn proud to admit it!

I think the bottom line is a lot of people are going to feel the movie is the worst trash ever, and around 30-40% of those people won't even have seen it and will be taking the critics advice or their friends who are pissed that every character wasn't Asian. And yeah, I just heard a woman on YouTube rant about how everyone should have been Asian because they were "so obviously Asian" and ignored the fact that he was Saiyan and there was no Asia with "Obviously Saiyans are Asian too, they all have black hair".
It'll be a decent movie, possibly surprising people, but it won't be beyond 60% enjoying it at most because it IS an American anime-to-movie adaptation, which eliminated itself in the eyes of Japanophiles from the start.
Go see it, enjoy it or don't, and then move on. Chances are, either opinion won't last in your mind the moment you see the Cowboy Bebop or Akira trailers anyways, and at that point the same exact rants will start anew.
EDIT: *chuckle at the Oosaru image* PLANET OF THE APES, man, that Oosaru image does make you think MK: Annihilation "USE YOUR ANIMALITY!"

If you've seen it and you feel its terrible, then no one's contesting that. I just get tired of hearing people assume the moment its announced that it is terrible. I've even heard some people nearly in tears that "Watchmen butchered it, wtf Hollywood, its supposed to be a squid!"

I don't even know if I'll bother seeing it. I haven't watched DBZ since I was in high school (I think). I might end up seeing it, but the trailer looked cool.
