"Mary Sue"
#41
My little cousin, who apparently is into this shit, told me that the guy could read minds. That, and he apparently SPARKLES or something when he gets hit by sunlight instead of bursting into flames. Bleh, I say. Bleh.

Even after reading the rules, I probably still marked too many things that brought my score up. Like, yes, Belle is likely one of the best in martial arts, at least if we're talking in terms of raw talent. (Of course, -everyone- in the cast is awesome that way because it's Dragonball Z - or is mostly awesome - so I'm not sure if I should've marked that.) But his awesome is subverted by the fact that his Achilles heel is a fear of girls - a fear so potent that he'd faint if something with boobs hugged him. I don't think there was really an option for that Sad

Entirely true. It's how you can tell its written by a girl, the Sparkly Vampires and the cute fuzzy Werewolves.

Additionally, the main character suffers entirely from unique snowflake syndrome. As in, the entire freakin' basis and REASON that Edward becomes just oh so attracted to her is because he reads minds, and yet can't read her's. That's it.

They have nothing in common, no reason to like each other. Its a gothic kid's dream, because it boils down to "Edward is so mysterious and different from everyone, diary, but you wouldn't understand" and Edward's writing on his livejournal with "Bella is so mysterious and different diary, but no one understands".

That said, I think that it could have been a decent story - without Bella. The movie wasn't really horrid, just beyond predictable and flat out dumb in some parts (zomg sparkles, followed by "/cry I'm ugly" "no, you're so beautiful!" "/sob really?").

And all the little goth kids obsessing over it are dumb as well. Even my younger cousin who started becoming more goth lick is now absolutely obsessed with it. Won't read anything else you hand her, but obsesses over anything Twilight. Doesn't seem to realize that this is entirely a replacement fad for Harry Potter since HP finished being written.

Then a coworker (short fat bitch girl) was bitching up a storm the other night when it was released that she didn't care if we lost tips, she was going to go demand our customers pay out early at the end of the night because she absolutely had to get one of the first copies of the movie before it sold out because that's what real fans do. So someone asked her a week after if she'd had a chance to see it yet (because she's reading the author's new The Host book now and talking about how its just so mindblowingly innovative and new) and she responds (with this absolute seriousness and *VERY WEIRD* that lustful look as if you asked her about sex or how great chocolate tastes) "Oh yeah... I've watched it every night since I got it, plus this morning before coming into work. Its just such a good movie and book, she's the best author we'll see in our lifetime." The dude stared at her for a moment, and despite liking the books himself (out of character for him), he just goes "...you've got problems." Of course, this is the same girl that started smoking so she could hang around the managers after work and when confronted by her brother about how weird it was that she smoked now, she got excited and goes "Yeah, it makes me look older doesn't it?" with total sincerity.

TLDR: Dumb naive bitches obsess over Twilight.

Apparently the Jonas Brothers (whole other hate mongering thread) were "Blown away" by the movie Twilight. Coincidentally, this was also in an article saying they would love to do a song for the soundtrack of the next movie. I think they were being "blown" by each other when they watched the movie.

I gave my 12 year old niece the book for Christmas. She finished it already.

Was there sex in it?

The whole book is a vampire wank fest, sexually frustrated characters. I don't think it's until the book that Bella has sex, but apparently it's so good she passes out.

It's misogynistic as well, Bella tends to act like a good little housewife and lets Edward emotionally abuse her. Not only that but pretty much every female character in the books are nothing more then weak willed, stupid, and whiny girls.

Edit: It wouldn't be bad if Bella was a bit less shallow, Edward could still be abusive but would be called on it and Bella would be more independent. Also, get rid of the sparkly crap, make his skin turn pitch black and become rough like coal with cracks of glowing red like his skin had burned and his insides were smoldering.

NOW TAHT WULD B TEH SKIN OF TEH KILAH AMIRITE?

In the last book. Not too detailed, apparently, but yes, it is strongly implied that Bella and Edward screw one another. Followed by Bella's eggo being preggo. (EDIT: "Strongly implied" means that it mentions their emotions and the fact, from what I hear, that they broke the bed.)

There is also a lot of grammar errors, poorly structured sentences, and improper use of words.

I wouldn't let he read more, you might damage her ability to function properly in society.

Josh Wrote:Mary Sue is tossed around way to easily now, the problem with those sites is it nitpicks every little thing to the point that your character is a Mary Sue unless it's a friggen' quasimodo that can't do anything but lie, cheat, get jealous, and look stupid most of the time.

A Mary Sue is supposed to be a fan-made character that is clearly an avatar of a fanfic writer which is essentially infallible and disobey's the rules and context of said story. Like putting your character into Star Trek TNG and having him turn out to be stronger or smarter than the Q.
This.

A lot of the shit on that test is getting way beyond the scope of what's actually a Mary-Sue. Like 'Is your character driven by revenge?' and 'Are they antisocial?' Those are character flaws, they've got nothing to do with being idealistic or breaking the rules of the universe for your character.

The test also doesn't really account for people who are already well-aware of their character's stereotypical traits and use it deliberately in order to make a point, or for stylistic reasons. Rose can be juvenile, paranoid, irrational and indecisive, but according to the test she's flawless and such a blatant Mary-Sue that I should start over already (score 49).

The test doesn't say anywhere that a character can't be a "Mary Sue" intentionally. And, really, you shouldn't take it for more than it is: an internet quiz.

I'm just sayin'. There are probably worthwhile tests out there for Mary-Sueness, but this ain't one of them.
