Gais, gais. I'm at Job Corps. I've been going for a week or so now. They got me going through this preliminary period where I find what vocation I want to be in (thinking Medical Office Specialist, maybe Medical Assistant..), go through some classes where they talk about Sexual Harrasment, Fire Safety, Water Safety, etc. Oh, and I have roommates now!
The roommates I've had so far have all been pretty cool, though one reminds me of my brother Josh (pain in the asssssssssssssss) I've been up every morning to shower, clean my dorm, head to roll call in our dorm lounge, then hit breakfast. It's really tiring, but I think I can do this. It's all about knowing which hoops to jump through (paperwork), and they teach you all that anyway.
So yay, I haven't gotten kicked out yet, nor gotten any major disciplinary warnings! =D

I'm curious.
What in the name of Christ is Job Corps?

Effectively its like a mini boot camp to help people get control of their lives and get moving along in life.
It also can double as a GED program.
My younger brother did it since he and my sister were both dropouts.
I'm actually pretty pissed, because he got out of it talking about how now he wanted to go into the military and how his life was cleaned up, he was finally away from all the bad influences, etc.
Then a co-worker that constantly deals drugs to a lot of people decided to casually inform me (since he sees nothing wrong with people "making their own decisions" - largely because he's profiting from it I guess) that my brother had visited him the other day, and then continues on that he had bought weed from him and all. I'm not here to argue about the morality issues of if someone views that as a bad thing or not, but with my brother, that pretty much means he's back into everything, just like my sister when she does. He's already decided he doesn't want to go to the military now, and apparently only went to my co-worker because his other dealer wasn't available and he wanted it right then. He's also back working at the same Sonic that he was originally working at before Job Corps and just partying all the time.
Shit fucking pisses me off.

As cliche as the old addage goes, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make em drink.

I'm really sorry to hear about your brother Tim. Thedrug counselor here (though I wouldn't call him that), told me about how there was this kid on campus here that was openly defiant about not getting clean and how he was pro drugs... One of the drug counselor's kids ended up being approached by this kid while he was trying to get clean and sold him drugs. They both got evicted... *sigh*
If I ever met that kid or your brother's dealer, I'd be tempted to punch him in the face. Hard.

Congrats, Spence. ^.^
EDIT: Check out the bottom of the forum main page, the part that says "Check out our newest member", for irony.

To me, the thread is less about criticizing/defending Avatar and more about wondering how stoned Jack was when he saw the movie/made the thread.

Two and a half weeks now! I'm already slowly coming in sync with the rythm of things here. Chores in your room, chores in the building you live in, three square meals per day, etc. Living with roommates also has it's own share of surprises (good and bad) All the teachers are relatively nice, and I'm making some sort of progress (albeit slowly, and not without a few stumbles here and there) I think the thing that most surprised me here is that it really isn't as bad as a lot of my friends have said. Though to be fair there are hundreds of different Job Corps, and this is supposedly one of the top programs...
In any case, I got an oppurtunity and ain't hell nor high water (or doing the splits in the mud) going to keep from wasting it.
EDIT: I think the thing I like best about this place is that there is almost always something keeping me busy enough for me never to get bored. So, yay being worked like a mule! ='d

Question: Do you pay to go to Job Corps or is it a free thing or do you get paid for your labor?
I don't think we have anything like that in Canada; sounds like a good idea.

No, Job Corps is pretty much free for those that meet the income requirements. Any higher though and it's a no go.
