I'm finding that Extra-Thick Skin is a very popular skill. If a brute doesn't pick it up, then most players tend to not bother going beyond level 8.

Luck.

But there's no max stat. After 10, the bar changes color to show someone is in the 10s/20s/30s/etc.

I always get annoyed when they cycle through all their weapons. Like, start the fight, get hit, toss (not get disarmed) their weapon for a weaker one, take a swing, miss, toss that, fight unarmed a bit, pull a weapon out, immediately throw it, pull another, toss it (their last weapon), immediately go try to fisticuffs the guy with a flail and bear.

There's a skill for each stat (Herculean Strength, Feline Agility, Bolt of Lightning) that gives stat boosts.

My Brute K. Sasaki is about 33% of the way up through level 9, and another one about a quarter up through level 9. I have no idea when I'll finally get to level 10, though. Depends on how many fights they win and lose along the way.

A newish character of mine has the Trumpet. Haven't actually used it, though. :E

And so I've heard people complain about tossing one weapon away for an "inferior" weapon. I don't believe there's any really bad weapons in the game, but there are some super weapons like the Stone Hammer or Halberd, and I don't think anybody here has those kinds of things. If your Brute is just discarding something like the Broadsword for the Knife, then that's actually an upgrade in overall damage output since the Knife's high speed causes more attacks. But, the Knife comes at the price of being weak against weapons with a high counter-attack rate like the Spear, because the Knife's frequent attacks give more chances for the Spear to counter. Weapon superiority/inferiority is really situational.

The baton is a bad weapon. Most of the time I would rather use my fist.

it has better block rate and a slightly better counter rate than unarmed. unless the brute has martial arts or something, anything is better than unarmed.

I got one brute to reach level 3 by winning all 6 fights, of course it's a pupil for somebody else. Every pupil I make for my own brutes end up being epic fail.
