Got to wondering in the chatbox: what's the purpose of professions? I mean without it you could still say your character was a mercenary or bricklayer or whatever and write about it, and earn zeni from RPing. The only thing I can see that it does game-wise is reward people for homogeny in their writing. Does it do anything else?

Enables you to make more cash by making a real career. By doing a number of job quests, you raise in the rank of your job, letting you earn more money each time you do a quest.

I know that stuff. I'm just wondering why you should be rewarded more for doing the same kind of stuff with your character rather than doing lots of different kinds of things. Rose's thing is that she's non-committal, so I basically have to suck it up and have a fraction of the zeni everyone else is earning.

You could just get the job hired hand, mercenary for hire etc, as they're paid to do whatever they're paid to do.

Oh, that's another thing I was gonna ask. If I put my job as 'Adventurer', does that mean everything I write counts as a job quest? If that's the case that's probably what I'll do. But then that penalises people who want to do more narrow jobs and that seems a bit lame.

I believe it needs to be a real job, Cain I believe tried to pull off something similar and he was denied. At least I believe it was Cain, might be one of the new characters.

Okay.
We are discussing this in the Staff thread right now. For now I can only state the rules that apply right now.
To address the doing any quest you feel like issue, I grab this quote from the rules.
Quote:Additionally, if you decide to do a job quest that is not within your Profession, you’ll be automatically docked zeni from your pay. For example, if I’m a mercenary, and I decide to build a brick wall, I’ll still receive zeni for the job I did, but I’ll be deducted a certain amount from what I normally get.
You can do anything outside of your current job but you will be docked an amount of zeni because you left your realm of expertise (so to say).
Other than that I suggest you read this if you are still unclear about the current job system.

What?
Unclear?
When the person requests the job, said person will/should post what job quest they are doing. We do reserve the right to fail the quest if we feel not enough effort has been put into it. As of now, I know not of a situation where someone has failed.
If I have not answered your question. Explain to me what you mean.

Yeah, the timing of this discussion is fairly good given that we've been discussing this for a week or so on the staff board, so there might be some changes, there might not. So far we are giving everyone their chance to get their piece out and figure out what we want to do.

I can't make money in the afterlife and God knows how long I'm going to be there.
That might be more of a 'poor me, QQ' statement, but I thought I'd include it in a job thread.

Zeni gain is considerably less than what it used to be with the old system. However, with the current job system as it is, the more you job quest, the more you will rank up. Higher rank=more zeni gained per job.
