This is why Magic sucks ass:
I have Hostility, tap 7 Mountains for 6 damage, and that 6 damage is converted into 6 3/1 tokens with Haste. I attack with all of them toward my opponent's few cards with 5-ish Saprolings.
My opponent activates his card's ability, which allows his Saprolings to simultaneously block my attacks AND be devoured to super-power his card. My attacks are negated, despite being more than enough to wipe his cards out (and him, he had 4 Life), and his super-powered card destroys me next turn.
That doesn't make any logical sense. So cards can block and simultaneously be devoured? Magically? There exists a card that, whenever a card on its side of the field is destroyed, can simply be 'devoured'? Bullshit. That's dumb.

To be honest, it sounds like you rushed into it, without a backup plan. My experience with Magic is minimal, yet all the games I won had a fair bit of strategy into them. Namely, if I see an opportunity, I think of all the things he COULD do that would eliminate me, and decide if it's worth the risk.
Of course, that also requires knowing what most cards do.

My frustration stems from the fact that I consistently lose to this guy because of some whacky rule technicality that he did not properly explain before, and that doesn't make any logical sense (that is, cannot be derived from mere reflection).

You sure he's not, like...
Playing you? Or not doing it properly? I find a lot of people don't really completely understand the rules. I sure don't. I'm sure if I was to ever play Tim, he'd be like "What the fuck are you doing?! YOU CAN'T DO THAT! WHAT THE FUCK, MAN?! I SWEAR TO GOD I'LL KILL YOU!!!"
I imagine he'd chase me about with a knife for a while. Whichever one of us suffers a caffeine crash first would no longer be able to run. If it's him I get to live, if it's me, he'd probably stab me and cry and tell me how it's for the greater good, etc.

Either you're trolling or I'm really surprised you expect to beat someone if it's your first time playing a game and they're already familiar with the rules.

*shrug*
I'm a bit egotistical and prideful. And I'm smart (the first sentence should not negate this one). When it comes to games involving a degree of strategy, I can't resist. When I lose for reasons not related to a flat out mistake/oversight (which, with ADD, I'm prone to) or better play by someone else (which is hard to recognize if I'm not familiar with a strategical system), then I tend to become upset.
I've kicked his ass a few times already. But when I do lose, it tends to be because of some rule I didn't know about, or wasn't fully explained.

I like Tarantino week on Sky Indie. Basically it's just showing a couple of Quentin Tarantino's favourite films, but before each film Quentin kinda introduces it and talks about it for around 15 minutes. It's just really interesting listening to this guy who obviously has such a huge amount of knowledge of films.

I was only kidding around, Marks. Poking fun at other people is how I deal with the horror of my continued existence.

I hate that I was in the last 25 of a 180 SNG/tournament, with a decent stack, I got dealt aces when a HUGE stack in first position made a big raise. I shoved feeling that he didn't make such a big bet to just fold to a reraise, plus he had such a massive stack, I think the average was around 8k (I had 7k) he had 27k, I was pretty sure he didn't get that kinda stack by folding, and I was right, he called with A10 of hearts, which by all accounts is a pretty terrible call, but whatever that's what you want I guess. Anyway wouldn't you know it he makes a flush, and I'm out.
I've built up a fairly decent thick skin to bad beats as I've played more poker, but that was quite frustrating I must admit, since I haven't had much success in 180 man tournaments and I actually felt I was playing quite well, and was in with a good shot of making the final table.

Crikey!
Does honesty earn respect or inspire revenge? Is it smarter to attack the strong or annihilate the weak?
