Rod Hardwood Wrote:doesn't matter if ps3 is selling on par with 360, because there are more total 360's out in circulation. since the $$$ comes from game sales the one with the most consoles wins the race. that's what made the ps2 the big winner last generation, even though the original xbox was the generation's powerhouse, which is why MS pushed hard to be first this time.
This really only matters for exclusives, and the 360 has been matched pound for pound for quality exclusives, and this doesn't appear to be slowing down any. Simply put, many developers are trying new and innovative things, and in many cases, the 360 just can't handle what they are trying to do. Kojima stated, flat-out, that the 360 cannot do what he needed done for MGS4. In other words, if they ported MGS4 to the 360, more would be lost than just graphics.
For multi-platform titles, though they tend to be slightly better on the 360 (for reasons that Waff gave), this isn't an issue at all.
Quote:also, in a few more years it'll be time for the next console to hit the market and the ps3 will be old hat (360 hit markets early in 2005 and console generations don't even last a decade). in alaskan dog sled races, the guy in front would cut the path which would allow all the following racers to have an easier time, then when the leader slowed down from exhaustion the others would pass him by. this principle applies to competitive business markets as well. sony really hurt themselves by pushing cutting edge technology in an industry where high expense is not treated very well by consumers, especially since they reached the market last, and if you guys don't get that then wuteva. if not for the rabid xenophobia of japan, the ps3 would be on its last leg right now.
Next-gen won't begin, from what I've heard, until 2012 (according to most projections). That's still 3 solid years left, which is a very long time (long enough for Valve to complete half a game).
And, you'll notice that the PS2 is STILL chugging away at the market. Sony's strategy has been 'ten-year lifetimes' for their consoles, and the PS3 will be no different.
In Kingdom Hearts 1, there was an option at the beginning of the game, allowing an individual to 'begin at dawn, at midday, or at dusk'. If you began at dawn, you would level up quickly in the beginning and slowly at the end. If you began at dusk, you would level up slowly in the beginning and quickly at the end.
This is sort of like that. Microsoft began at dawn, Sony began at dusk. Except Sony at dusk was stronger than Microsoft at dawn, and will only get stronger. So it's not exactly the same.

You do realize that Microsoft has been steadily dropping their price as well?
Quote:and the comparison continues to push the idea that you have to buy wi-fi and a new harddrive for the 360 to get equal performance. i never have bought a new one of either and don't plan on, my experience has not suffered for it, plus there's no comparison between the quality of the services between pso and xbla. keep trying, though.
If you don't want those extra features, then you don't have to have them. Personally, I appreciate all the additions in my PS3 that I didn't have to pay an inordinate amount of money for.
The chart isn't saying you have to have these things to enjoy yourself. What it is showing is that, to achieve a level of quality in your 360 (as far as components go) that matches the PS3, you have to pay much more than the price of the PS3 itself.
If my PS3 didn't have a wireless adapter and free online gaming, I would never play multi-player. I do, and I enjoy it.

for the Arcade you have to have a harddrive though, even if it's the $100 60gb model that still puts it at the cost of the new PS3.
also, man, don't be a faggot. You've probably never even used the PSN to any real extent so how can you make a comparison between the quality of the services?

the xbox i have was bought years ago when the ps3 was even more expensive than the 360. your pic tried to draw a new comparison between costs when most people have already made their choice, so it's a poor man's discussion from the start, because in the event of buying a new console for some reason people like me don't have to get a new hdd or headset, and wi-fi is at least optional (due to it being unnecessary) whereas on the ps3 it's a forced buy. on top of this, dropping backwards compatibility is a serious nail in the coffin. i love old games, and i was happy with how the manufacturers were all negating the need to cling to old consoles. not anymore.
if you want to get pissy about this then you're going to have to validate what you mean by "real extent" of using sony's free online deal. i'm not in the mood to get drawn into some clintonian word game right now.

I think you lose Rod. Not your position, but you.

It's not opinion, it's fact.
The PS3 started a year after the Xbox 360, but if you match their release dates the PS3 has had more units pushed. They had different start times, but the PS3 sells more.

and 360 is still about 7-8 million units ahead of ps3. at this rate, it's going to take them until we're well into the next generation to outsell the xbox unit for unit, which is what translates into game sales where the money is made.
i remember squaresoft thought themselves so awesome that they could push a ludicrously expensive theatrical title of their flagship franchise, final fantasy, and make it work by virtue of their awesomeness. it bombed like hiroshima (haha), they spiraled towards financial insolvency, now they're square-enix. sony is doing much the same. sure, they're month-to-month sales are good enough in a normal competition. sure, they're way more popular in japan where people typically buy more consoles per household and more games per console. but, they're not keeping their heads above water. i know MS can eat financial losses like a champ, and nintendo went the smart route by making the cheapest console ever, but sony is not ms or nintendo. the funniest part is that sony's losses stem primarily from their insistence on cost-is-no-object quality hardware. cost is an object, probably the most important of them all.
here's three articles, the first from Q2 2007, Q3 2008, and Q1 2009 that paint a fairly entertaining tale for anyone who's not a sony fanboy.

ironically, right now gaming is expected to be one of their few shining spots, but let's keep that in context: this is coming after years of their gaming franchise hemorrhaging cash, and it's doing not-terrible as a stand alone part of their company while nearly everything else falls apart.

Rod, there is a lot in your post to respond to, but in my experience from discussing anything of value with you in the past, I'm not sure it'd be worth the effort.
Sony is doing rocky in a terribly economy. Most companies are.
Sony's sales will increase exponentially with the new PS3 Slim.
The PS2 is still a strong contender.
It'll survive. And it will likely dominate in the coming years as well. The major argument for the 360 over the PS3 used to be price. Exclusives are reasonably matched (though everyone has their own preferences). Now that Sony has hit $300 for the PS3, expect to see a huge leap in the Playstation's sales.
This was the plan all along.
