Java Programmers?
#1
Look, I'm taking programming at my university and I suck at it.

With that out of the way, does anyone here know what they're doing (and also happens to be willing to help out) with Java?

Vad's certainly given me a hand a few times, but I often continue to find myself stuck. I'm really stressing out over this shit. <.<

Anyway, yeah. Thanks.

I took some a few years ago, I am taking C and C++ right now, what is going onz that you need help with?

It's mostly general. Right now I'm working on a program that I simply cannot get through so I'm hoping to talk to my prof before the due date, but it's mostly basic stuff.

"How I go about making 'x'" or "why the fuck does this line yell at me" etc.

lets see some code or the assignment

Ah... would you mind if I IMed you tomorrow?

I'm... bagged. I just kind of want to leave it alone for tonight.

K, but don't hold off too long, I have to write three programs this week for my class and a pseudocode one.

Yeah, I'll keep that in mind.

Thanks, Josh.

Ouch, rough week. Hopefully nothing like full running programs and instead simple ones like scripts or something.

Yeah they are just small things, the pseudocode is to create something that calculates wages, including overtime when over 40 hours. One basically asks you to create whatever you want that asks for one character based input, and one interger based output to create some kind of string- but you need to use one nested if else, and one chained. The other one is to calculate a scenario in which a ninja and indie fight based on user input, indie has to shoot in so many seconds, the ninja can travel so far, the distance between them is so far, and the ninja's sword is a certain distance away. You also have to program it so it doesn't accept negative values or characters.

And the last one calculates the area of three shapes, a circle, a triangle, and a square based on the input a user gives the program.

Edit: But I also have a 5 page english essay due on thursday, as well as two written physics questions that are about two pages each, 30 math example problems and 20 question online assignment. Plus a shitload of reading, and a physics lab on friday.

Edit: I'll post the code once I am done if you want to see it.

The pseudocode seems easy enough in theory. The other way I guess just is some bullshit used to have you try out a specific type of code (as in not giving you the option to bypass that method of handling a situation in favor of another solution). The ninja one actually seems the most difficult from my humble perspective, but might not be as its pretty much just straight math like the first one (though actual code rather than pseudocode, which makes all the difference).

But as far as everything you've got, the old addage that each second might not be a long time on its own but once you add it to itself enough times it becomes a lot of work comes to mind.

And I wouldn't really understand the code, sadly. I unfortunately had to leave school before that point. Not that they taught anything other than RPG or COBOL...

Nah, pseudo code sucks. It's basically a mix between full blown code and regular english so it's kind of cumbersome.

From what I remember (and could be/am likely entirely wrong) it was basically just you stating in English what you intended for each step. In other words, for every bit of code you would normally write, you would instead translate that to English as "Take a step forward. Calculate pi. Is an object in front of you? If YES then go to step A. If NO then go to step C. A - Is the object Poor_Bitch? If YES then go to step B. If NO then then go to step C. B - Insert your foot into its ass. C - Loop."

No it's more like...

Let varOne, varTwo, varThree all be intergers

print "Please enter the number two"

varOne<-readInput

if input is equal to 2, print "You typed in the right number", then stop; otherwise, print "You did not print the right number"

Ah yeah, I remember now. Because you still need to use coding terminology as a median step.

So, it's basically like a coding language that you can't even use.

I'll stick with non-pseudocode, but I assume I'll have to use it in classes at college when I get there. Damn.

If you can post the Java programs, I'll be happy to help out. Java's really fiddly with some things. It was like... it makes both good and poor coders write mediocre code. =\

I'd say more like the prep work. Like planning out your code before actually writing it.

Well, yeah, but as soon as you introduce forced conventions or terminology into it, it's technically a structured language that isn't used. I much prefer 'free-form' pseudocode, and better yet, a simple graphical scheme, possibly a flowchart. I've got one such scheme spanning 5 A4 pages, describing a simple neural net algorythm, with genetic-type propagation, used for a tic-tac-toe game.

Of course, I'm better at visual learning, rather than through typing, so, to each their own, I guess.

Both Java and Sun Microsystems are useless pieces of shit, imo.
