'Fighting Style' techniques
#1
I'm not exactly sure why the other thread was locked, but I guess I'll comment here.

I'm very leery of the idea of having fighting styles being something that you purchase with Techs. Fighting style was, from what I understood, something that you just roleplayed. It also seems like making people 'buy' styles would lead to ridiculous situations like:

Player 1: Buys a tech called Kung Fu for 20xp.

Player 2: Buys a tech called Kung Fu for 40xp, because he wants to kick player 1's ass in a fight.

Player 1: To snub player 2, upgrades his Kung Fu to 100xp.

And so on.

It's also another one of those techs that infringes on the capability of Abilities (specifically MAS) which, IIRC, is something you guys have tried to avoid?

I'm generally leery about completely passive abilities, despite the fact that I have a couple myself. Feral Aura is kind of an activation, but Awareness is constant, though it starts out being worthless and gets better the longer he fights. A fighting style tech is just a flat, no-energy cost increase to your fighting capabilities, which just seems like it would be really abusable.

Thoughts?

It was locked because it has sparked the discussion between Kaden and Josh that Ander referenced to in the Like/Hate thread. It's being debated. Everything you mentioned has been brought to the table and is being discussed.

As to who locked it? No clue.

Fighting to the bitter end is an advantage when your opponent does not wish to perish.

Yeah, I locked the previous thread. Ironically, it was in an effort to avoid this exact post. Oh well.

Like Vad said, it's being discussed. If people want to throw out opinions or thoughts here, that's fine, I just ask that staff stay out of it for the time being.

Well, I'm guessing that this is talking about physical hand-to hand type fighting style.

In that sense, I, like Belle, am not comfortable with the idea. A style, is not a Technique, nor a move and shouldn't be thought as so.

If someone wants to have a fighting style, and techniques based off of it, then I think thats the route to go. I mean, take Cain for an example. Looking at his Custom Tech inquireries, his characters fighting style, would be some type of hand to hand Kung Fu type ordeal.

Kung Fu, Tae-Kwan-Do, Bujitsu or whatever they are called, aren't techniques. They are practices, in which they can have Techniques within them...

IE Goku's Rock, Paper, Scissors, or even the real life, Drunken Monkey(We've seen a few techniques branch off from this where the character goes in a berserk mode or feels little to no pain for a set amount of time).

I think that's enough to make my point and hope its understandable...

Actually, Mal, that was really coherent and made a whole lot of sense. Thank you.

Just so you understand, and before more people post. That wasn't the intention, it was more like Ki Control where it was a flat cost regardless of what you called your skill and all it would do is separate those who have mastered martial arts and those who haven't.

That makes sense, I guess.

I mean, I think it's kind of extraneous and unnecessary. But then, we already have Ki Control, so if we're going to have a DBZ RPG where people might not have something as basic as that by default, I guess people can make characters that aren't talented in martial arts, too.

Would I have to buy it again for every martial art style, or would I just be able to change the title over time? Because it's pretty difficult for me to think of one specific martial art Hibiki uses.

The comparison to Ki Control is still an inappropriate and misleading one.

That kind of sounds like a Tech-type oredeal that low balls Martial Arts Mastery. Like Fighting Sense low balled Ki sense, as Belle initially said, if I am hearing this correctly. I mean sure it's possibly an XP sink, if you will, from the way I'm understanding it, but I still think it seems like a low ball to MAM, as I said.

Of course I might not be understanding it correctly.

Personally, I'm going to keep my style slightly similar to Retane's because It's fun to RP an unorthrodoxed style. I mean, my character is suppose to be like that, and I dont want to label a style on him.

If such a thing had been added you would probably just create your own style, and say it incorporates a list of styles you think Belle uses. Though I think you have MA Spec. So like Ki Spec you would be automatically assumed to have this technique like they have Ki Control.

Just to be clear... Take everything staff is saying in this thread as discussion fodder and NOT as us explaining anything near a functioning rebuilt game system to you guys.

I'd care less honestly.. But it would undermine Martial Arts Mastery...

But I had initially meant to put the way I thought it might be done(up above), But removed it as I didn't want to put a face on it...

But after reading Josh's comment, I posted it.... But I'm still quite unclear, and I still am unsure if it's going to even bother me.

But I figure giving some kind of point of view, is better then none at all.

2 Cents. Regardless of if people choose to sink 5 xp (whatever) into fighting style...

Actually, sitting here and putting a tag on a combat style changed this whole response.

So: My Perception

A fighting style buyout waters down the MAS ability... I'll use my PK ability as an example. I've noticed there are techs that cater to psychokinesis (PK) that grant leeway over its entire range of practicality/creatively standard usage (I might end up using PK to bluff superhuman strength, fetch the remote, or rearrange parked cars when I end up looking for fodder).

On the same token if combat styles (which can't only fall under hand-to-hand in a DBZ universe) are available for purchase it should just be bore in mind that they'd still be inferior to
martial arts specialization (MAS).

If I sound like I'm all over the place I'll throw in a cut the s(hi)tuff out section.

ABILITY > TECHS
MAS > ANY CARBON TECHNIQUE

It doesn't take a technique to punch someone in the face and if you have the leverage, timing, accuracy and leaping ability it shouldn't be too hard to kick someone in the face either.

I'm seconding what Retane's saying, just that I understand that people just want the tech sometimes and trying to remind people to respect abilities.

What about, like:

Basic Melee Proficiency, 15xp(number's just thrown in, could be w/e): *Name* Has enough experience in melee combat to know what he/she is doing, leading to a fair level of competence and integration of a fighting style or two into his/her regular arsenal.

Wording's weird, but I think the general idea is there.

That seems to me more of a choice of your character eg. my character has that, whereas someone like Sage doesn't. I don't think I should have to pay xp to be a proficient martial artist when I have been all this time for free. If you wanted an edge over it, then that's what MAS is for. It shouldn't need to go any further.

Sage Wrote:
Arsenal
Martial Arts Mastery (Wing Chun, Tae Kwon Do, Jiu Jitsu, Boxing)
Inner Power (115% stats)
Ki Control (Basic mastery)
Flight
Super Leaping

This is directly out of my roster...I've been roleplaying my Martial Arts Mastery as Martial Arts disciplines.

To me, the thread is less about criticizing/defending Avatar and more about wondering how stoned Jack was when he saw the movie/made the thread.
