If Jack is anywhere near as good at college as he as at finding the appropriate animated gif for any given situation, he will ace it.

Idk, the navy's been pretty good for us so far. Then again, reb did the hard shit. I just sat around and waited for him to get home, which was pretty hard all and of itself.

this is an email i sent my sister when her response to me saying I didnt want to go to college was essentially "lol rite":

"I keep failing, I'm probably not going to even qualify for financial aid after this semester. I'm tired of not being independent, Jeane is a cunt, I want to do something important with my life, being a student hasn't worked for me in 6 years, I have no job experience, I want to learn how to shoot people and things, I've been a coward most of my life, I've never done anything I really wanted to do regardless of what other people would think, (ideally) being shot at makes a man out of you, etc.

Joe needs to do it too because him being homeless and having no direction in life makes me not want to do anything."

Jeane is my aunt, Joe is my brother. Honestly, I "want" to go to college, and have a good time, and not fail, and not be a complete social idiot, but I pretty much know all of that will happen anyway. The only reason I'm considering it now is because I want to be a Marine, not join the Army. I need some sort of foundation to base the rest of my life on, and I can totally see myself being the exact same person I am now 3 years from now or so if I were to try to go to college. Surely most of you recognize that I've said this before, I've been right for the past 6 years.

inb4"with that type of attitude, of course!" : stfu
inb4Saz: no im not enjoying the attention, Evan is actually a BONER FOR MAKING THIS THREAD ahahahah a boner

Here's the difference Jack:

You attempted school while living in the same households and living in the same environment. If you get away from your roots and get away from all that you are surrounded by, it gives you more motivation to make a change. You cannot change if you don't take a step forward and living in the same house going to a collee and not being forced into society is not going to help push you forward. Moving to a different state and having me to help force you into social situations will put a step forward.

You want courage? You want to be brave? Be courageous enough to take the step you just admitted you WANT to do. If you truly want something you can make it happen. If you truly want to be something, you can make it happen. If you want to be courageous, then stand up for yourself and do what is best for you. And if you want to learn to shoot people, I'll take you to the shooting range.

but in no way does shooting a person make you a man. What makes you a man is the choices you make in life.

Just as a 'for the record' thing, university (or college for you USfags) WAS a big deal for me, and personally I changed a lot. Just the experience of living with a bunch of other people from different areas away from home for years was definitely worth the money. At 18 I was pretty much a social recluse and bored/depressed/unmotivated WoW player, at 21 I'm by no means the bicentennial man but pretty much objectively better in every way for the experience. My case was probably more extreme than most (I'm not typing the full story here) but I know I'm not the only one with a story like that.

Also, this is after being kicked out of two local colleges (or ... what the fuck do USfags call our 16-18 colleges?) in two years, consecutively. Neither of which I made any new friends at or enjoyed at all, really. I pretty much thought the chance of me scraping through university was laughable.

Go to school first. Get an Associates or a Bachelors and then if you want to join, join. You'll get to join as an officer in most cases.

Jack, only you can know whats the best path for you to take. Listen to what your friends say, really actually listen, take them into account and compare them with your personal outlook.

I have a friend who went to college and it changed his life for the better, I have one who went and dropped out and is poor and directionless. I have a friend who went to the military and is thriving and set for marriage to a woman he loves, and I have one who is still the confused, tepid person he was when he joined. Its not a matter of one or the other is better, its a matter of the personal fit. No one else can truly tell you that. There I may have made you even more confused. You're welcome. (just don't do what I've been doing and choose 'none of the above')

Go to college. Show up to class, study, work hard and don't take the opportunity for granted. This is your chance to improve your lot in life.

^As a totally unrelated aside, this quote has helped me out far more than I'd like to admit.

Speaking as someone who has done the "I'm only going to college to stay on medical insurance" thing, I definitely didn't care about school. I went to a community college and basically sat in the library torrenting all the time, not going to classes. I'm just glad that I decided to go back to school far away. A change of location and a clear goal do wonders for academics.

TL;DR Go to college.

Guys, it's pretty much useless. Thank you for all your words of advice but Jack isn't listening to any of us. He is set on not leaving and staying where he is. He was registed for the Spring '10 semester and classes start the 11th, I've offered to pick him up at the bus station if he took a bus but he isn't getting a bus or anything. I don't think anything can change his mind, sorry for wasting everybody's time.

I wish I could change your mind Jack, you deserve to get out of that and live a better life and I wish you would do this for yourself.

Where does he live?

Could we drive there and drag him to college everyday?

This thread is reminiscent of the average conversation between me and Jack.

"I'm going to join the Marines"

*One day later*

"Oh wait, no I'm not"

"I'm going to go to college"

*One day later*

"Oh wait, no I'm not"

"I'm going to beef up and become a vigilant, fighting crime and cleaning up the mean streets"

*One day later*

"OH WAIT NO I'M NOT"

He has no conviction in his decisions and procrastinates like a motherfucker. It sucks, but you can't help somebody who doesn't really want help... as I'm sure he knows from when he attempts to give me advice.

Actually I don't believe he doesn't want help. Scratch that.
