Hate: My first car payment is due on 12/31. I had to wait on money to clear in my primary checking account to make the payment. I just logged onto the other bank, a credit union actually, to pay my bill tonight so that it would clear in the morning.

Of COURSE, every possible option for "Credit Card Payment or Inquiry" tells me "This service is not available."

I have to be at work two hours before normal time tomorrow and we are going to be slammed till midnight (from around 2pm). I'm going to have to go down personally to see them and make my payment in person, but something tells me that this is intentional (it seems like online pay always "goes down for maintenance" for 24 hours at the one day before late mark). I bet if I get down there, knowing banks, I'll see a sign saying "Closed 12/31 and 1/1 for New Years" (noting that they are also closed Saturday and Sunday).

So now I'm trying to figure out how to not have my first car payment be late and immediately defaulted or whatever the hell they'll do.

Basically, I hate when everytime you try to pay a bill, even if you try for three days early, some "technical issue" comes up and it locks you out of the system until (miraculously) 12 hours past the deadline.

If it's anything like my bank, they won't care so long as you can get it in early the next day.

Just explain what happened and be polite; if you can give them a reasonable explanation and come up with the money immediately, you're fine.

I "missed" two payments over the last three-and-a-half years (sidenote: almost paid off! =D) because of electronic bullshit. I just told them over the phone to pull it out of my account because the money was there and I didn't know why the eft withdrawal didn't work.

Out of curiosity, the first payment is 169. Would you recommend paying 200? Its a 48 month loan, and I would assume that would mean that paying the minimum requirement would pay it off in that amount of time, but I also know that most of the time with credit, if you only pay the minimum, it'll never pay off. (I don't want to pay extra just yet if its unnecessary, due to needing the money).

Paying over the minimum payment is generally good. It will make future payments be smaller, as well as lowering the overall amount you will be paying thanks to that damned interest. Just make sure the extra goes to principal and not to the next month's payment.

EDIT: For example, on like a $5000 loan, you are more likely paying upwards of $6000 in the end. Paying extra means the bank gets less of your money.

It's a bank loan; not a credit card.

Unless your state has recently repealed its usury laws, you'll be fine making minimum payments.

My loan, for instance, was/is a 4-year loan that required me to pay around 180 bucks bi-weekly. If I only made minimum payments, it would take 4 years to pay off, incl. all the interest the bank would accrue. That said, mine will be finished probably a few months early both because I paid a little extra when I could and because my interest rate dropped to like 3.1% almost a year back. XD
