It doesn't matter what location is most commonly associated to the term. The name tends to particularly refer to a specific style of animation. Similarly, both "American comics" and "Manga" are under the comics umbrella, but if one were to do a comic using the art style typically associated with manga, it isn't incorrect to refer to it as a manga just because it wasn't drawn in Japan or because the artist wasn't Japanese. There is a such thing as an American manga-ka. As long as it follows the styles and story designs that you so specifically pointed out, it isn't incorrect to label it as part of the genre that it is going out of its way to be. I don't see where the person's racial identity or geography really matters here.

Can I ask why people think joining the army/navy/airforce = "doing something with their life" moreso than another profession?

Anime comes with a lot of baggage as a word, a) and b) Japanese animation is starkly different in story telling styles, tropes, and pacing, as well as straight up looking different. They both fit under the umbrella term of animation and by the strictest definition 'cartoon' but language has evolved past that.
I'd actually argue that Avatar, the animated series, has much more in common with Japanese animated series than it does American. The story-telling, tropes, and all involved overarching themes that were weaved throughout the main story by following the various characters and dealing with their own unique personalities, backgrounds, and flaws.
I agree with Ashe in that "anime" is more a reference to the style an animated series follows ("style" here applying to both story-telling and artistic direction) than where, geographically, the animators are from.
Having said that, I wouldn't call Avatar an anime, but I would also hesitate to call it... whatever we're calling "American cartoons." I think they did a great job of taking the clean, child-friendly artistic style of more American cartoons and combining it with the intriguing, complex, relateable storytelling more commonly found in Japanese cartoons.
It's neither. And both. And, at the end of the day, we're just arguing semantics. We all obviously agree on the underlying themes and spending much more time on back-and-forth about labels... well... it's just silly.

Same reason people take fulfillment from being religious.
If you believe in "defending your country" or supporting ideals or whatever recruitment phrases are popular nowadays, then you're going to tell yourself that following those beliefs will be more fulfilling than sitting behind a desk. It's a self-fulfilling kinda thing.

Or maybe people are like me. You live in a po dunk town with no way to get a job or leave to find a better job. You cant afford to go to school or anything on your own and you find out one day that you would be able to join the military. You have a job for four years , you have insurance that you need and you have money and a stable place to live where ever it may be. For people like me we see it as a chance to do something besides struggle for the rest of our lives.

Hate: Last Airbender. The acting anyway...'Earthbenders...why are you acting this way? There is earth all around you.' WTF?!?!?! NO SHIT YOU DICK! THE FIRENATION PUT EARTHBENDERS IN A 'Prison' WITH ROCKS AND EARTH ALL AROUND THEM *screams*.
Saw the film in 3D, best 3D effect was the fucking opening, expected more '3D' effects but got a few.
Thanks a lot M.Night shamamamamalon. Would have loved it if he threw in a twist that made Aang or...'Ung' as they called him, dead along with Katara and the Princess biatch. Sokka...eh I was just made they didn't get his weapon right and the bending techniques were all...oogy boogy.
Fucking Aang...god damn I swear they could have gotten a better actor for the guy. The movie failed. FAILED FAILED FAILED FAILED FUCKING GOD DAMNED FAILED.
I would have rather watched all three Twilight films.

Pretty much.
In reality, just living day to day is doing something with your life. People then gage how important, or fulfilling what you do is based on their own interpretation of worth.
An example would be sports, like Basketball or Baseball. Those guys get paid a lot of money, and are often called "heroes", but I still think that a Janitor has more importance in this world than a guy who can bounce a basketball, or has a 6ft vertical jump.
