We do not get to know how many roles there are or how many of each there are.
A normal game if Mafia is about 9 people, 7 non-mafia and 2 mafia. I think the ratios are kept about that big. So, since there's 18 people, I'm guessing 14 non-mafia and 4 mafia. Fits the norm perfectly.

No.
The odds are very bad.

Would we know? Or would that be secret till the end and we'd have to just assume based on if people are still dying?

Rose could also just do whatever the fuck he wants.
I'm still assuming there are at least three mafia, but no one should be operating under the assumption that there are a set amount.
I know, for a fact, that mafia spent the majority of the last game operating under the assumption that there was a doctor. There wasn't. We still had to play around it, but we couldn't make any definitive assumptions. Same is true this time around. We don't know, so no one should act like they do.
Unless, of course, you actually do know, then we'll probably just lynch you because it seems suspicious.

Roles are revealed upon death. So we'd know if we lynched a mafioso. We'd also know if we lynched a doctor or a sheriff (assuming there is one).

Just trying to drill it into people's heads. Either it works and they let an innocent townsperson live or I get super-lynched. Either way is fine with me.

Gotcha. I guess that makes sense.
I think last time I played I was a Doctor, years ago, but I don't remember the other connections involved that can confirm each other. Civilian seems like a pretty blah role to take, but I guess its one of the largest roles.
Do all the mafia roles get different abilities like the Doctor and Sheriff (or Insane Sheriff from last game, unless that's just limited to that one game) or are they just like Civilians with some team ability? I'm guessing there's like some kind of Sniper or something, though I don't know how I'd change that into game mechanics (I remember the Doctor has a role like a Banshee's Veil, basically blocking a kill attempt but leaving themselves open to possible death). I remember that the Sheriff can do something to try to figure out people's roles a bit and try to convince others, and I think he had a team of cops to help out. In previous games (I know this game can have differences on a per game level), have the mafia ever had some kind of "Hacker" or "Spy" role that does similar? Like the TF2 Spy in that if they are investigated by a Sheriff then they can have their role appear as the same as someone else, or Hacker in that if they figure out who the Sheriff is, they can find out who he's investigating or such?
Would be some pretty cool roles to know about, though I guess we won't know all the roles in order to keep surprises in the game.
Does revealing your role tend to end with you dead right after? If a Doctor protects you from an attempt, would you be notified of it?
Trying to look through some stuff and see what might apply to this game, but if someone has quick answers to questions then it also helps to refresh me (and others) on these things.

Its an interesting strategy. Normally, I'd immediately suspect the first person to say that (YOU, you son of a bitch), but given what I know about Mario, its quite possible that instead of playing with a specific plan, his plan is to actually just not give a fuck for a while until the game narrows down a bit (ala Dante's and such). So I think I'm leaning in the direction that he's not mafia for now, but I'm obviously not eliminating anyone from suspicion entirely (beyond a possible set few).

Being a townsperson, and this being my first game of Mafia, I'm content to kind of let things pan out for a little bit. That said, though, I'm actually curious as to how the numbers will end up working out. All I know is that at least for right now, no lynch

Townsperson here. Actually a little disappointed to be boring again. :/
HOWEVER, I think our only choice is obvious. Lynch John Doe

This should make it pretty easy too, anyone who won't vote for John Doe is probably mafia anyways.
edit: Might seem harsh but let's look at this; 100% of John Does have been mafia. I think that's as good a reason as any, no? What we get from a no-lynch vote is the sheriff gets to test someone and we probably lose a townie. So if the sheriff gets no usable information and isn't willing to reveal their role yet (why would you with no info to give?) we really get nothing. A random member of our group killed for sure, and not much else. If you guys think that's the best choice still, I'll switch if we need to hit majority.
For people who might think I'm mafia, if I was I would've just no-lynch voted and killed John Doe in the night phase. There would be really no benefit to being vocal as mafia this early.

The odds of successfully lynching a mafia in one go are about the same odds that the sheriff has of finding the mafia, and way better than the doc's chances of saving the victim. I really hate no lynch days, even the first one. It always feels like we're not making any forward progress when the noose lies empty. I can appreciate not wanting to lynch an innocent townie, but eventually we're going to need to start making choices here.
I'm going to leave my suspicions out of the thread for now, but I will be tracking their conversations and looking for holes.

We should also take into account that we have no idea what crazy powers the mafia have in the night phase, we should assume that Rose has given them more than the ability to just kill one of us. They are probably also getting the opportunity to collect information.
