The problem with that generalization is that, often, people simply didn't know about X until it became "cool." Then, once they knew about it, they found out they liked it.

The iPhone, for example. It went through that "its too cool so I can't like it" period. Then people were all "man, this thing is handy" and it moved on to simply being a thing.

Yeah. I get that. MY point was that a lot of people don't know to try it until the "general public" has any thoughts on it. Yeah, being an early adopter is cool or whatever, but sometimes things just need exposure and it's dumb to denigrate people because they didn't know about something until lots of people were using it.

Hate: Other M reviews. Not just because it was a great game, but because it's a major discouragement to trying anything new with the Metroid franchise in the future. And yeah, I'm late, but I've been playing through again and remembering just how goddamn fun it is, easily worth the marks other Metroid games have gotten.

Pretty much all the complaints have centered around the story, which I really liked for the most part, or equally-frequent complaints of it being too easy or too hard (which is pretty amusing). I really hope Nintendo doesn't buckle and backpedal on all the cool changes, but it's hard when they do this new stuff and it just gets knocked for taking a different approach.

They portrayed her as not-flawless. God forbid Samus show emotion or weakness. But if you read the manga (which was written by the same dude who did all the Metroid stories besides the Prime games) or play Fusion, you see there that she's got some demons too. It's just that in most games, they let you fill in the blanks, so people are pissed off that it contradicts their perfect vision of Samus.

Eh, I thought it was (from what I have read, I haven't played the game yet) because she's sort of portrayed as being in an emotionally abusive "relationship". It wasn't so much that she showed emotion or weakness, it was that she did so in such a seemingly uncharacteristic way to a man more than willing to dominate her to the point of manipulation. Considering how few truly strong female characters there are in video games, it was kind of a slap in the face to give her a personal dynamic that "puts her in her place."

Again, this is just what I've read about it.

I already said why it's seemingly uncharacteristic - because people have made up their own personalities for her based on being an ultimate feminist rolemodel. As far as I'm concerned, being flawed makes her a better character. I mean, she watched her parents get killed in front of her, then got raised by a bunch of foster-aliens who were then pretty much all massacred too. Any character that's not a bit fucked up after all that is not very believable. Latching onto her commanding officer as a father figure may not be the most BAMF thing to do, but it makes a lot of sense considering her background.

Then the end of Super Metroid, which immediately precedes the game. So yeah, she's got a lot of reasons to not be perfect. I wouldn't really call Adam abusive, that's just reading into things too much. They just needed a way to limit her powers without coming up with some story about losing them all and having to regain them, so they had Adam be a bossy git about it. They had to do it somehow. He's manipulative in that "for your own good" kinda way, which culminates in him *SPOILERS*[spoiler]locking Samus out and then sacrificing himself.[/spoiler]

Part of the problem behind people's surprise is that the manga, which is the official backstory and helps make perfect sense of Other M's story, has no official English translation.

Doe actually beat me to linking that. I pretty much agree 100% with their analysis of Other M's presentation.

I have absolutely no problem with Samus being a flawed or troubled character, but, as you yourself said, there's stuff about her that the players know or can infer from the other games. Other M either abuses or simply ignores those things, I thought. I honestly would have liked the game more if it hadn't been attached to the Metroid series.

EDIT: Oh. And the voice acting. That can neither be defended nor excused. Just... wow...

I thought the mechanics made it a lot of fun to play, though I'd probably side with the "a bit too easy" crowd. Regardless, the final boss fight was a blast (I mean the final, final boss fight, not the final story-boss fight) and I actually greatly appreciated that they created a mostly-suitable control scheme using just the remote. Not having to use the nunchuck or a classic controller is a nice change of pace.
