Minecraft 1.8
#1
So, Josh got me to thinking. With 1.8 coming soon, I'm wondering on everyone's thoughts about resetting the map for it.

With new biomes and dungeons and such, seems like it would be a pretty decent thing to do for 1.8.

Should I do this, I'll be keeping the old map to upload and give to people if they want it for single player (if it can be used for that, which I think it can) and also so that if everyone wants, I can reset it as the map.

Let me know your thoughts soon, 1.8 comes out next week or so.

Eh, I have some stuff done, but I'm down for a new world.

New world.

I say that as someone who has invested quite a bit in the current world, but not as much as some.

A new world would not be my favorite idea (as someone who has invested maybe top 2 of time played) but I wouldn't quit over it. Maybe send me like a stack of diamonds since I already put like 15400 hours in.

I'd like one (I mentioned that point a few times on Mumble and in Minecraft chat) due to how many updates we've been running the same server, but I also know that Josh, Waff, Gina, and a few others have put a ton of work into the current map. Gina already told me she's prefer against it, Erin's fairly impartial I think. I'm thinking we could start people off with a "stimulus package" to help them get going strong if we do, but that's ultimately up to you. I actually found some new land (involves going through the Nether to another portal, puts me in the x4000 region) that is in newer chunks anyway, so if the update comes and people don't want to change maps, I'm going to go exploring from that point to generate new areas.

That's if I don't screw it up. Like how I discovered a dungeon literally inches from my portal exit when I came out that gave me actual Cocoa Beans. I then managed to find a way to die in lava before climbing out of that short cave. Not cool.

One solution is to simply get a second server. If we got a second server, I would play almost exclusively on that second server. Might visit the first server a time or two.

If we could get a list of people committing to a new server, figure out a price and rental, and split that cost, that would be faboo.

I'm in for a new map.I honestly haven't payed very much due to the fact that the projects I got done on this map are either as done as I want them or as far away from being done as possible.

Also, it seems like almost every inch of the sector I picked was already being used, so there's that too. XD

I WOULD feel bad for waff and all the people that have likeomgwtwfhuge structures, and I understand if they don't wanna change maps, but I dunno how much I'll really play anymore? Not trying to be petty, I'm really not.

You can always gen a new map, open it in a map editor and slap in the old stuff people built and want to keep.

Honestly gathering materials isn't that big a deal unless it's something like TNT, it's just losing built stuff that is.

Either way I haven't even logged on yet (still need to get the server IP sometime haha) but I know I wont be playing til 1.8 because I'm interested in the new stuff they're adding.

Josh and I collected something like 10,000 sand to build the giant pyramid of sandstone. Then I used some insane amount of Iron to build the subway system under the map and like another 10,000 cobblestones to build my castle walls. Then my brother built a ship and a Pagoda in our area, using I have no idea how much wood. I used like 4,000 torches to light up the entire area surrounding my base.

There are entire forests missing, and most of the beaches near the pyramid are cleared out. I don't think you even understand on what scale I build. :0

I helped build an enormous version of Bioshock's Rapture on one of the PA servers back in the day. We dug out our own sea for it and then built the entire thing under the water. I'm pretty sure I know the sort of scale you are talking about, and that is only one of the massive projects I've worked on, and I have done some big projects myself in both single player and on a small server I run with some friends. There's stuff on the PA servers, and one of the SA servers I've been on that would probably dwarf the entire explored area on the Chubbs server.

But regardless, that isn't what I was saying. I'd already mentioned the idea of editing your buildings into a new map. If we did that you'd be missing the blocks you have stored away, which probably wont be THAT big a deal, right? That's what I meant by gathering some resources (including stuff for tools, etc) isn't that big a deal.

I've considered starting a server at some point as well, maybe with mods (to give those who don't want pure vanilla an option) and a different map without others losing the one they want to build on. Haven't come to any decision though.

Maybe a giant contest could be had or something to determine starting bonuses, like a building judgment or something. I think I'd rather just give people a really large number of general materials though. Basically start a new map and flatten an area out near spawn for a city to be built (and allow people a base of operations) and put out multiple areas of about 25x25 (with open road areas between them) that people can claim that will have multiple chests on each lot filled with different materials to give people a boost and incentive to get productive. I think people just don't want the starting downtime grind and I will probably do something like this if I start a server myself. Don't really know what to go for though.

If we do start a server, I don't have a problem throwing money at it, but I don't want to be the person heading it up. My money is rather limited atm, so I won't be able to sustain a server on my own.

Gina's stance, paraphrased as told to me, is that she is probably not going to to continue to play on SMP if the map changes and will go back to single player because she doesn't like the idea of her stuff routinely being taken away (by that I mean multiple patch updates that add to a significant difference) and thinks that if people really want to see the newer stuff that gets added, its as simple as spending some time traveling to a new area to generate new chunks. She feels that even if it is tough work to relocate your entire base of operations to a completely new area, its more tough work to build things and then have them taken away by majority vote. She also feels that spawn is irrelevant due to beds. She'll abide by the majority vote since she can't do anything about it, but she's adamantly against it and it will decide if she continues to play SMP or asks for a copy of the world file for a single player world.

She may re-evaluate her stance over time, but this is her immediate impression.

Will new chunks generated on a 1.7 map completely embody 1.8 characteristics?

yeah.

I talked to my friends and they are also not huge fans of a new map. If the map file can be passed around I think they would be down with that though.

I think we should say like a new map every 3-6 months because this is going to keep happening.

I think that it may be a good idea to like "save" the big shit so they don't get disgruntled. Cause MILLIONS OF BLOCKS.

Gina proposed something along these lines (http://www.shadecrest.com/?p=1622), basically creating a map for each the way people previously had to work the nether on SMP so that we could go back and forth from the Pre- map to the Post- map. I don't know how the logistics would work, but just posted it for thought.

If it were possible, I'd be happy if I could bring over just a chest of the stuff I have collected.
