Link Commits Genocide
#1
So, I was playing me some Link's Awakening and having a good nostalgic romp. Link was slaying bad-guys left and right and doing good deeds for all the townsfolks. Life was good.

Then, after beating one of the Nightmares, it says something that disturbs me a bit. Something about if Link wakes the WindFish the world will disappear. And that's when I realise something. The Nightmares aren't fighting Link because they're evil pricks. They're fighting Link to save the world.

Now, I'm not saying that they aren't bad. They ARE trying to take over Koholint after all. But the fact remains that they did evil in order to ensure that the island would continue to exist. That's why they're fighting. They're fighting for the right to exist.

Blew my mind. And the shittiest part is that the owl lies to you. He states that no one knows if the island is an illusion or not, but being part of the WindFish's spirit, it would have known. And so, with the best of intentions in mind, Link defeats the final Nightmare, wakes the Windfish, and wipes out an entire island's worth of sentient beings. Bravo Hero. Bravo. In comparison, Ganon is a schoolyard bully. Link is the Hitler of Hyrule.

Discuss our Hero's ultimately evil act.

I wondered about that myself actually. Like, "How is this not a bad thing if it's real?"

Isn't the point of that game that it's all a dream though? Isn't it Link's fight back to reality? That's what I thought.

It is. But it doesn't negate the fact that he erased a world in favor of returning his own. Without a second thought, I might add. The WindFish basically tells him that the island will only be a memory after he plays the instruments. So, Link immediately plays them. No letting people enjoy their final moments. Just a flash from existence to non-existence.

But he only erased his imaginary world. We erase the world of our dreams every day when we wake up. We erase friends and enemies alike every morning.

Watched an anime about something like that. There's this world or w/e that's apparently this sleeping being's imagination and the residents are trying to keep her from waking up lest they cease to exist.

Link's Awakening was my first Zelda game, I was like 10 when I played it. I remember being sad as hell at the ending and actually calling the Nintendo hotline to ask what the fuck had happened to Marin and all the people. True story. The guy on the end of the line was like "uh ... they were like ... a dream, and Link ended the dream." And I was like "But ... why? What?"

@Sig: True. And I'm sure if our dream beings were aware of their existence (sentient) and knew that if we were to wake they would cease to exist, they would also fight to exist. And it would be no less sad that the self-aware dream being was killed.

tbh, I've never played Link's Awakening. However, from what I've gathered, the dilemma here is a choice between reality and fantasy, with Link choosing reality.

Calling Link the "Hitler of Hyrule" is kinda... well, wrong. In about three different ways.

I've never really beat much of this. I guess it's time to start playing again. On a related note. My recent Game Informer came yesterday. They did a whole article about the Legend of Zelda series and how's it one the few original NES titles that has survived the test of time.

Fighting to the bitter end is an advantage when your opponent does not wish to perish.

In the 'good' ending, it's implied that the dream-people became seagulls, or something.

Still a pretty big downgrade, even with the ability to poop outside

It's funny because this exact conundrum comes up with Sigfried. Being sad over the loss of things that you create yourself, that are just figments of your imagination. Being connected to things that aren't real. Very difficult issue to deal with.

TRUE FACT: Beating Link's Awakening is the entire reason why I could never finish a game for the next 12 years.

Honestly, I've always thought it's jacked up. The people are 'imaginary' but only in a literal sense, they still had thoughts and feelings. I'm pretty sure Marin even says something to the effect of "I don't want to disappear ..."

Link put himself and his quest above those people. I mean, you can argue that he needed to escape to go save Zelda and thus Hyrule from Ganon, which did INCLUDE the Wind Fish and thus Koholint. I'm pretty sure in the timeline it's like, somewhere in the second game where he's mid-quest and has to cross the ocean, or at least it was when it came out. But it's by no means an easy question. People underestimate Link's Awakening, but there's a reason it's one of my favourite games.

Play Alundra. Zelda, but with somewhat harder puzzles and a story that I love.
