I've heard about twelve or fifteen times a friend or a set of friends say 'We're going to make a game', and of those, only one actually has, and that's because he sat down and busted his ass for two weeks programming.

For the moment, nothing. I just figured this be a cool thing to get going, and before we do anything, I'd like to get some people together that can agree on a single vision. But, if we're doing it via RPGMaker or a free knock-off, a pixel-artist or something like it would be nice. And, of course, more programmers. And anyone who knows how to do sound.

What's the rationale behind those links specifically, Shun?

I'm on a journey to expand my knowledge through independent study. I came across a discussion about c++ and it made me think of this topic. The links only provide a preview of the type/level of programming that would be required. Also if any were interested there are tutorials to learn the programming language. It was just a random thought I acted on. The closest I'll get to contributing to the idea most likely, lol.
No offense intended of course. I just don't have the skill set required to help nor do I currently have the time. Figured I had enough time to pass that along though.

C++ is pretty heavy-duty. It's what the bleeding-edge, AAA studios are using (John Carmack being a god of the language), who need to eke out every last bit of performance, but Minecraft was written in Java. Numerous games (including SpaceChem) are written in C# on the XNA framework.
The first link refers to a situation that probably won't surface in a garbage-collected language (like Java, C# or Python). The second link refers to a custom collection implementation which is only a good idea if you REALLY know what you're doing (for most of the top languages, the standard collection libraries are very well-tested and very fast). The third link is definitely useful though. Floating-point arithmetic and all its idiosyncrasies show up a _lot_ in programming.

Addendum: At the end of the day, performance just isn't a big concern for the scale of game that we would be putting together, and that's C++'s main advantage. We really should be looking at a free engine. I've heard good things about Construct 2.
If we're serious about putting something together, we should rig up a sub-forum to start gathering ideas and deciding on platform/engine.

I agree.
And I wish I had more to say on the subject. Lol!
