Ok, I will begin by saying I have never read the books, nor followed the movies to heart (because I don't think they're that special like many others do).

With that said, the movies are supposed to follow the books, and if Gandalf didn't do a lot of magic in the books, there should not be much magic done in the movies... even if a movie "should" have special effects.
