Lasso tool is for newb's, real men use the pen tool and masks.

http://www.tutorialman.com and http://www.spoono.com are good enough for tutorials. You will likely just keep running into the same tutorial on any other site, if you want to be a trend whore, the in thing now is vectors. 'Abstract' 3d is way last year.

Grunge and Dark art are going out like Abstract, though you can easily mix Grunge and Vectors. If you want to know what vectors are check out the I-Pod commercials, that's a good example.

It's the pen tool man, it's like the holy grail of Photoshop. Though, really, if one is going to do vectors it's probably better to use illustrator.
