Greg sank back onto the sand, breathless and panting. Ryuudamon simply watched for a few seconds before dropping into a crouch, his eyes darting about suspiciously. The light of day was beginning to waver into a sunset that cast its orange luminescence about the land.

"We'll rest here for the night," stated Ryuudamon simply, sticking his sword into the sand and leaning on it nonchalantly.

"And where do we go in the morning?" asked Greg, sitting up on his elbows.

The dragon said nothing, but continued staring at the sunset.

***

Crunch, crunch, crunch.

Ryuudamon awoke suddenly, finding himself alert, filled with adrenaline. All around was dark, but he could sense something was wrong. He wanted to move over to Greg and wake him up, but he didn't want to let ... whatever it was know that he was awake. He sufficed by watching the shadows for movement.

Crunch. The sand moved next to Ryuudamon.

Shick!

"ARGH!"

A scream filled the air, and Ryuudamon knew his sword had hit something. A green glow spilled out and up into the sky - the freshly spilt code of the dead.

"What's going on?" murmured Greg, yawning as screams filled the background. He turned sleepily to see things moving back and forth in the darkness, like some kind of shadow puppet dance. "Ryuudamon?"

"Greg!" hissed a voice. "Move!"

"Hm?" the half-asleep teenager looked up just in time to jump aside. A wayward fireball exploded just where he'd been seconds ago.

Ryuudamon leapt across the blind battlefield, using his ears as eyes, his sword cutting a path through the enemies. "GREG!" he yelled, "HERE!"

Greg reached out to find something grab his arm. With surprising strength the dragon-monster hoisted his partner away.

"What's going on?" complained Greg, alternating between running and being dragged.

"Don't talk until we're away. They won't figure out we're gone until it's too late," whispered Ryuudamon.

After what could have been 10 minutes or an hour, they finally stopped moving. The sun was coming up, it seemed they had slept most of the night.

"Who were they?" asked Greg.

"Fucking bounty hunters," snarled the boy's partner. "Scum of the Digiworld."

"But, who would want to kill us?" asked the teenager.

Ryuudamon sighed and slapped his forehead. "You're more naive than I gave you credit for," he muttered sarcastically.

"Bounty hunters," repeated Ryuudamon matter-o-factly. "No doubt send by the Digi-Mafia in an attempt to kill me. They'll be targeting you too, now," he added, gesturing his sword in Greg's direction.

"Me?! What the hell have I done?!" demanded the teenager, outraged.

"That's just how the Digital Mafia operate," shrugged the dragon-monster. "They kill you, your family ... anyone who has the slightest connection with you is in danger." He spat bitterly. "I hate to endanger you by keeping you with me, but now they've made the connection between us you're probably in more danger by yourself."

Greg sighed. This wasn't turning out to be the best vacation he'd ever had. He found himself longing to be home, with all of his comforts, instead of out here in some world he didn't know. To his memory, at least, nobody was trying to kill him in the real world.

"So wha-huh?" the human's sentence was interrupted by a glowing beam of light. His Digivice was rattling, moving by itself the same way it had done whenever Ryuudamon had digivolved. "Ryu, the digivice!"

"Ryu?" questioned the dragon skeptically, before turning his attention on the little machine.

Suddenly a buzz came out of the device, causing Greg to jump and nearly drop it. It rattled about in his palms for a few seconds, and then a voice spoke.

<The time has come.>

With no warning, a beam shot out of the digivice, pointing into the distance. The awestruck teenager stood up, holding it aloft. The light was pointing into the far-off distance.

"It's like ... it's telling us where to go," said Greg, in wonderment.

"That way?" growled Ryuudamon. "That path leads to the desert." He turned back to his partner. "I don't know, Greg ... I don't really follow spectral voices," he said skeptically.

"What have we got to lose?" asked the black-haired teenager. "We were partnered up for a reason, right? This could be the key!"

The dragon sat in silence for a second. "Fine," he said. "But I'm going to kick your ass if it's just a prank call."

With that, the two began their journey to the pyramid.
