Day 1 Morning Discussion
#61
I know it's not, but in my last post for example, I felt I could have ended it much better than trying to crop the ending. I suppose I'm just too "wordy" of a writer.

A very sudden ending is usually a powerful clincher for, as you say, "wordy roleplaying". I just always happen to use a clincher anyway.

Something like, "Twenty peered into himself, and salvaged the bits of his own mental remnants, preparing to show himself to the world. Astral Projection, he had dubbed it. Slowly, his image flickered into view, giving him the freedom to interact with the world beyond Gero.

And so he did."

See? Last paragraph is four words long. Just make sure you don't leave your reader going, "Did what?" Make sure it completes it, while still maintaining that final punch. Whammo!

Yeah, you should totally listen to Krillin. A lot of people are under the impression that an ending has to be some massive, dramatic paragraph full of all kinds of good stuff. And it doesn't. Going in a completely different direction can be just as effective as trying to do what you think is the standard of practice. What Krilling posted is wonderful.

O.o

Are you being sarcastic? I can't tell.

Wow. I've posted more in this Saga than I posted my entire stay here. ^_^ I feel motivated.

He wasn't being sarcstic Krillin =)

I could make huge posts in this but Burter doesn't want them. Plus I'd try to go into so much detail that... well... I'd be fucked and bore the hell out of people.

I figure everyone that is tracking Retane's movements understand what he's doing and whats going on.

I'm only trying to write Retane. He's still in character development. Don't really want to write a whole detail of an area just to have someone else come along and do it differently. Plus Retane isn't giving a damned about the detail really. It's to early for him to worry about detail. As for the emotional detail for the nunchuks, well there was none really. He likes his cards more then the nunchuks. If I find I don't know what to write, then perhaps I would go into him figuring them out.

I just write. Some are around five-hundred, others are around one-thousand. If I got going and it ended up being two-thousnad, then I am going to post it. If BJ doesn't like it and I lose because of it, then at least I lost trying my best and writing how I like.

I guess it's just hard for me because I have my character's thoughts, reactions, emotions, and the scene playing out in my head as I write. I feel I need to be able to convey that image, and unless I'm going for humor, bluntness or something else like that, I don't usually do those simple endings. I wish I could though. I'm gonna try that in my next one. Thanks for the tips.

No offense, HF17, but that's kinda silly. In a competition, you have to learn to discipline yourself. If you know BJ is looking for shorter pieces, and you post 5,000 words, you're asking for trouble. And for what? To write "as you like"? Then make two versions, one condensed for DA, and another one to stick up in the Workshop.

I mean, I'm all for the purity of the write. Burt is too, I promise. But if there are restrictions, and you go past them in the name of writing "as you like", then you might be granting yourself a little too much freedom.

'Course, if you're willing to do that, power to you.

Then at least my writing will be being judged.

Well said, Krillin. You have a solid point. I am for diversity in writing. I know it's killing some people right now to cut their roleplays in half, and some people have to cut it by two thirds. BJ is also right: it's not impossible to do, because I see people doing it. Some people can say something in 500 words, while others say it in a 1,000. It's just different style. Fortunately for me, I usually don't end up writing more than a 1,000 on any given post anyway, but the word count varies from how I feel. I'll stick to how I normally do things.

I am just popping in here that alot of the posts I have made thusfar in DA have been as controlled as I can possibly get right now as far as length. The last like, one or two I did were long, but there was alot of stuff that had to be covered, such as the Piccolo thing. You guys know how vital he was to our clan before he became 13, so the discussion was bound to happen, and we rarely get the chance to get all clumped together like this. So... yeah. =P and such.

I actually quite like making short posts in groups. When you're posting by yourself, I see no reason not to post huge essays, and I criticise those who dislike reading those long posts because basically it's the same as had it been broken up into 5 short posts. In a competition with friends, though, it's good practice to write shorter stuff. It lets your allies get in a word, and you can have more 'traditional' roleplays, where you go back-and-forth. That's partly why everyone is being so active, I reckon, because of the whole community element.

Of course, sometimes I have a lot to say and I'll throw up a big post. Nothing I can do about that, I'll just post it up anyway. Fun first, ken?

Short posts= good to see how others character can react and shit. My short posts are short to allow others to get shit in so I dont have to fuck them up. Like I dont know How A20 or Tapion react to things soI cut myself off... l;etting them pick it up.

I'm a "short post" kinda guy. I obsess over perfecting my roleplay so much that I'm usually far too drained to get anything up beyond 1000 words. Unlike what others might do, I stress over each sentence as I first write it. Sometimes, when I've got a funny little gag going, I might crank out a quick paragraph or two, but usually, my posts are the result of a steady grind of my mind's millstones.
#78
I, like, never do that. I just write, and if the sentence doesn't feel good while I'm typing it, then I usually re-work it or scrath it, but that doesn't happen to often.

Yeah, that's what I do...There has only been a few times where I'll decide to rewrite a paragraph, but I like to refine my ideas before starting a post, generally.

Because of this, you can usually tell when I haven't done so.

I do the same thing. Which is why mine suck. Tongue
