and in the comic (Dark Knight Returns) he mentions that he had to modify the Batmobile for riots. They even use this model in an episode of the new Batman cartoon. I can't help but think the tumbler Batmobile from batman Begins was influenced in some way by this version (but I can't really be sure of that).

He makes the Batmobile a tank and stomps all the little punk mutants with it, it's really sweet.
He also does this:

and this just looks amazing:

Comm'on, punk! Let's do dis! o-(><o)
But seriously, it's not cool. Batman is best as a minimalist. He takes the least amount of material and applies it with maximum effect. I didn't even like Tim Burton's armored suit and techo-boomerangs, but this is just too much. Since this series is supposed to get back down to Batman's roots, it's not unreasonable for me to think that they would start small. Batman is an urban ninja, and half of the last movie was spent developing just that part of the character, and the second half immediately transformed into a combination of the worst parts of a Burton/Schumacher Batman movie. It was just painful to watch, and now this entire next movie is apparently going to be like that.
Batman doesn't actually need all this crap. I'm not saying that they have to design everything like a 1950's comic book, but they could actually make it a lot cooler by distilling Batman down to his bare essence. He can dodge bullets with a proper flap of his cloak, and karate-chop a gaggle of thugs into dreamland in a matter of seconds. The original bat-grapple was just a wire with a hook on one end, and the Batmobile is supposed to be a jet engine with a bullet-proof chassis on wheels. Instead of wasting screen time and project funds on frivolous junk (the whole scene with the Batmobile existed solely so people didn't go "WTF" when the thing flew across the river that one time, gah) they could actually make a real detective story, but they're doing another Cut-and-Paste Action Movie with a Batman motif.

I think with the movie they were trying to find more believable ways for a man to have all this stuff, and having Bruce Wayne come into the Applied Sciences division of Wayne Enterprises and using this prototype materials was the path that was chosen. I thought it was well done, and there is always room to further develop his use of technology as well as his detective skills.
You also have to remember they were making a movie to make money - not appease every Bat-fan out there (and trust me, I want Batman movies to be as amazing as possible, I can agree with you there) but they've got to take what they have and craft it into a money producing film.
I really hope the next movie is another step forward in this Batman movie storyline, further developing the character of Batman and Bruce Wayne, how those intertwine and how he expands his own personal war on crime. batman Begins was, as the title suggests, the beginning. From what I've read (pretty much from http://batman-on-film.com) it sounds like they are trying to not make the same movie twice, and instead want to create something new in the series to make it have some forward momentum. I can only hope it doesn't stall out.

The gadget exhibition scene was like something of a Bond movie. Granted, it was done to standard, but it's unnecessary. At least Tim Burton understood that what made Batman's gear so cool was the mystery of it: you didn't know if he was going to pull out a microphone to use the voice-activated commands on the Batmobile, a simple razor blade that extends from his gauntlets, or an explosive vile of acid hidden on his belt under his Cloak of Mystery. Without the surprise, it's just a matter for him to use his junk. D:
And are my ideas so terrible? Is a movie about a detective ninja solving crimes from the shadows as a hated and misunderstood vigilante while maintaining a prominent public life in the same society really less interesting than I think, just because it doesn't involve explosions and copious amounts of fictional technology? If so, tell me and I'll shut up.
Every sequel is based heavily on the previous movie, but most of them are acclaimed as being different and new. It's mostly just rhetoric to get more people into the theaters.

I never said your ideas were terrible, they are good ideas. I'm just not sure that's exactly where the movies are headed, which for you it sounds like, would probably make them less enjoyable.
I want them to get Batman right as much as the next guy, but they can only do so much with what they've got.

Why in the hell are you having such a heated discussion about Batman?! He is a comic book character. Batman Begins was a terrible film, and this one will be all the worse, based on what I've read of it.
But, this indepth analysis of the movie-industry and how Batman fits into it is ridiculous and unnecessary.

Uh.. well..
You do know that Batman is a genius, and he does use technological devices in both the comic, and earlier cartoons, right?

Yeah, but there was a time in the beginning when he didn't. He was just running around in a ski mask beating up criminals with his ninja skillz, and it took him a long time to amass his collection of zany gear. The Batman Begins movie went from ninja camp straight to The "ultimate-gadgets-of-invincible-technology" Batman. Burton and Schumacher didn't show his beginning, so at least they have an excuse to just jump right into the middle of his technological prime. The title to Batman "Begins" is just another check that the movie didn't cash.

Dab and I were just talking, no big deal.
I liked "Begins" I thought it was cool and did not suck.
but I won't argue it any further, I think Dab and I have made our points and stopped. Personally I'm very excited for the next movie, but to each his own.
