Proposal
#1
What are your opinions on a woman proposing to a man?

Is it stupid? Or somewhat romantic?

Some of you may not even have girl friends, or boyfriends, but in your opinion how long should a man or a woman wait before deciding to pop the question with a certain individual?

This is a serious subject, and I'm just looking for general opinions.

I fail to see the difference.

Depends, ultimately, on your boyfriend's opinion on the subject.

If you feel ready, and it has only been, say, just over a year and a half, and you decide to surprise him/her, is that wise?

I personally think you should've at least discussed the issue of marriage before proposing. Marriage isn't something that should be taken lightly; I think you should know the other person's intentions for their own life before you ask something as life changing as that.

And I'd rather do the proposing, not the woman. It doesn't seem stupid or romantic if the woman does it, it just doesn't seem right to me.

Don't speak in past tense, it hasn't happened for me =P.

I think it should be the man who proposes, but I'm more traditional about stuff like this.

If Tami had proposed to me, I'd have said yes like it was just a normal proposal. Later I'd prolly be like "maybe I shoulda done it" but so long as we both agree, who cares who brought it up?

And for the record, it was me who asked her.

Ok I agree with that.

Now. When I was 17 and in ohio, Amber asked to propose to her more then 10 times in les then a year. (This wasn't in no way shape or form the reason we broke up... unless she cheated because i didnt which I doubt... cuz.. dunnolol)

I felt like I wanted to be financially stable and had my feet on the ground firmly. I mean at the time I would have bought her the ring and shit but i had no credit and couldnt get a job till 18.

Thats how I felt. I honestly look at those 22 and younger having kids or getting married so fast as they do these days and call them foolish. I mean suresome work but from what I se they al change and are unhappy.... think before you do...

It hasnt been a year since I left amber or is about a year now and shes married and just gave birth. Care to guess how I feel this will end?

Like they said. Stop sit down and ask him. If you love him like you say you do then you should already be able to read him like a childs book. Bon'ty make him fel pressured. But dont hurt his pride either. Tell him you might want to do it. In the end this will decide it all. Can you or can you not communicate? Communication n love makes a relationship.

Retane, what you said is exactly the reason I refused to propose to Erin for that long time. The having ourselves financially stable and feet on the ground issue. And she brought it up ALOT, but then would cry about "I'm pushing you and that makes me bad" Sad I really never knew what to say. For the record, I did propose, but for alternative reasons to the financial thing.

First off, let me start by saying that as a man it is our duty to propose to the females. In some cases the females do propose but it is a rare occurrence. Women proposing just isn't the same. it just doesn?t feel right. I would be stunned if a girl ever proposed to me because I wouldn't expect it. It should be the other way around, but i will not propose to a girl just because I've been out with her for a year and a half. I will propose when I am financially ready to support her for life, and most of all WHEN I AM READY! Which for me will be a long long time away.

What naive young people now a days tend to do and I state A LOT, is go out with a girl/boy for just over a year and think it is time to propose to them. The other gender would then accept the proposal and the two will then decide to get married. These marriages tend to only last a year or two. Celebrities do this all the time and it's pissing me off! They may think they're ready to get married but in reality they are not. The only ones I feel sorry for our the parents. It's them that tell their children that they don't think they are ready, and that they should wait, but they tend to not listen to their parents and think that they no better. They go ahead and get married without their parents blessing and kabaam after a year and a half they split up and have their parents tell them "I told you so" and this happens a lot!

My point is there is no need to rush things. Anything successful takes time to build on. I could go ahead and rush my SK training just for the sake of Spiritken, but I am still thinking of ideas to make it better. I need time to do so. TIME is the key.

Eg - When you rush your homework, you won't do as well as planned. Taking time to do things would often result in success.

And there you have it folks. The way I see it.

Personally, I don`t see why everybody makes such a fuss about proposals. Just beacuse you propose to someone, doesn`t mean it`s the end of the world. You can stay engaged for as long as you want. And in the end if things don`t work out as you hoped you can still break the engagement. Just beacuse you get engaged, doesn`t mean you have to set a date or even set it soon. However, it is true that the couple should be quite commited to each other before one proposes. Afterall, that is still taking the relationship to a new level.

As for who should propose....its a question of personal prefferances really. It is nothing shameful or stupid if a womann proposes. However, im not sure it should be done quiet the same way men propose to women. Also, I personally would have perferred to do it myself. I consider a proposal an obstacle I must face on my own if I am to prove worthy of marrying the woman I love. Also, it would kill me as a gentleman if the woman would have to do all the hard work and spend so much money on a ring. Big Grin

Any side can propose, but before we made our choice, we had a deep conversation on where we feel this relationship was going and if it would lead to Marriage, and what type of Marriage it will be. So in my opinion, talking about Marriage before actually proposing is my advice. If both sides agree that the relationship is heading in that direction, then it's only a matter of time before female or male pops the question first. I personally asked my wife after about 3 years of dating.

My dad proposed to my mother only after two weeks of dating.
Guess what? They have been married for 16 years! Sure they have had there problems in the beginning, but they pulled through.

What I'm trying to say is that not all quick proposals end as quickly as they came. It all really depends on the people that marry and the circumstance there currently in.

You've known him for a year and a half, but didn't you like just meet him when you went to England recently? My personal opinions on the matter are that you the man and the woman need to spend alot of time together first, like live together for a little while. Get Financially stable, and realize that they can actually stand (and love) living with the other person all the time (minus work). After that, it doesn't matter who brings it up, which needs to be done. It should be brought up, talked about, agreed on. Then the man 'officially' proposes to the woman.

This is probably the only time that I am traditional about anything, but my thoughts are the man is supposed to propose to the woman, as the same as the man is supposed to ask the woman out.

Personally, it doesn't matter who asks who, I asked Michelle, but that doesn't mean that the woman can't ask the guy.

Michelle and I got married after knowing each other for only 9ish months, and this December 27th will be our 2nd year married together, but we were a special case, being in the military together and working the same job, we were around each other for nearly 24/7, so we spent more time together than the average couple.

Something you should ask yourself before getting married is, why do you want to marry this person? Could you trust him/her completely if you were seperated for extended peroids of time? Could you trust yourself being alone whilst they are gone? And the biggest, and what I believe to be the most important question, Can you live life without this person?

Now, that last one is kind of a trick question...the answer I believe is correct is yes, you can live without the other person, if you cannot, then you're rushing into the marrage. You should be able to take care of yourself financially, physically, and emotionally before diving into a relationship, after all, if you can't handle your own baggage, what's going to happen if someone else brings in more issues?

Although it's more traditional for the man to propose, I don't think I'd be too weirded out if the woman did it sometime. I sure as Hell wouldn't mind, because men like me need to be pushed out of the proverbial nest for every new stage of their life.

As for how long to wait? At least a year. At least.
