I've just made a discovery. If Ikkaku had learnt Bankai all this time, that means he must have been holding back against his fight with Ichigo. If he had used Bankai on Ichigo at that time, Ikkaku would have won the fight.

They don't specifically say when he first acquired Bankai. He may have acquired it after he recovered from his fight with Ichigo, thinking, "Hell if I ever let that happen again."

Yeah, that's a stretch, but it may be feasible.
