I'm thinking of buying one, however, it's about $600.00+ here, and I need to know something about it. If any of you own it.
Is it buggy?
Can it play ps2 games? I want to play FFXII mostly.
Because I only really like RPGs should I just get a PS2?
Thanks if anyone can help.

It can play all PS and PS2 games, HOWEVER.
The biggest downside is you need a HD TV in order to play the Blueray or to get the true graphics it offers, and they don't really come with the hook ups to do so, so you'll end up spending more than $600.
Do yourself a favor and just stick with a PS2, when/if you buy a PS3 and you don't have a HDTV, the graphics aren't too far from the same...not to mention the PS2 is only $129.00 right now, so let's add up:
PS2:
System: 129.00
Memory Card: 24.99
FFXII: 34.99
Total: 188.98
PS3 estimates)
System: 600.00
Memory Card: 40.00
FFXII: 34.99
Extra PS3 cables: 20.00
Total: 649.99
HD TV for PS3: 500.00
Total: 1149.99
Also, if you only want the PS3 for FFXII, it'll only give you the same graphics as the PS2, so it'd be a waste, though for future titles, it'll be worth it.
My suggestion: Buy a PS2 for now. Once better/more games come out for the PS3, and it dropps in price, just trade the PS2 in, and then buy a PS3.

You can do that? Trade a PS2? I know they'll probably release more FF titles and good games for the PS3, which is why I considered it.

Yeah, actually, i just traded my PS2 in...the big one will get you about $40 at Gamestop...if you have the thin one you'll get more though.
Also, Used PS2's can be bought for about 99.99 right now...so yeah.
I just got a PS3, this is why i know this stuff lol. I've had a HDTV for a while now, but I tried it on my friends normal TV and yeah, it's not much better than a normal PS2. HDTV, a decent one, will give you great results, but as usual, the more money you spend, the higher the definition.
RPG's are why I got the system too, I just have a friend that works at Gamestop, so I get him to get me discounts. lol

It can't play PS2 or PS1 games. O.o
Edit:
And, I would get a Xbox 360, because the graphics are bascially the same, just on some PS3 games the pixels are darker shadded, but that doesn't make the game any better. Just worse. =P
Its been proven by various people/sites.
Edit:

^ Wrong. Its about 70$/? for games on the PS3.

The PS3 isn't doing too hot now.
I don't like saying that, but you should wait. Once they get a decent games base, they could very well become a power player. Right now, though, save your money.

In all honestly, if you're video game fan, just save up your money and buy a PS3. With time, the world is just going to get more sophisticated and make better games, and better systems. There's no point in buying a PS2 when there's a PS3 out which they are going to just continue to work on and so forth. Sure it's expensive, but it can play PS1 and 2 games, so it's like a PS2, just better. You can always wait until the price goes down ofcourse.
This is just my own opinion though, because the way I think is like this. If there's something out there that's good, then I want it. I want to buy the best and newest of everything. I own a PS2, GBA, GB DS, PSP, PS3, XBOX360, and a Wii. Yeh, I spent alot of money on all this, but the way I look at it is, I work hard, very hard, and I get paid for it, so if i want something, I think i've worked hard enough to get whatever I want. And I think anybody who works hard should think the same way. If you want it, buy it. It's your money, and you worked for it. So just enjoy life to the fullest, there's no point in not enjoyin it, it's yours!

I haven't heard any bugs happening with the PS3 consoles. Sony is also being really good about releasing new content and system updates when they're needed.
As has already been said, it is, in fact, backwards compatible. The issues with backwards compatilibility have been primarily with the European and Japanese consoles, since Sony tweaked the hardware specifications for those consoles. The North American versions of the PS3 feature the most stable backwards compatibility.
So if a get a PS3 not only will you be able to play the RPGs from the PS2 that you like, but you'll also be able to play the RPGs that will be coming out for the PS3 later on. Square has already announced at least two versions of FFXIII for the PS3. That's a pretty major draw, in my opinion.
Another thing to keep in mind: people over-play the importance of an HDTV. It does not make-or-break the consoles graphics to have an HDTV. Regardless of what TV you're using, the graphics for the PS3 are phenominal. What people tend to say is that "the graphic aren't as good without an HDTV" but that's a mis-leading statement. They aren't as good as what? A PS3 on an HDTV. That should be obvious. Its still a graphically more powerful console than either the Wii or the 360. Having an HDTV just makes it that much better.

It really bugs the hell out of me when people say "oh I can't get a PS3 because I don't have an HDTV." Pfft.

I don't have an HDTV and I can still clearly see that the graphics is by far better than the 360 and Wii, so I have no problem with my TV at the moment... just can't wait until I buy a larger one.

I heard that when you play PS2 games on the PS3 there's alot more jagged edges and just generally looks worse, can't reminder why though, I saw it on Youtube somewhere.
But if you're just looking for great rpgs and don't mind poor graphics, then get a PS2.
Here are some pretty good games you should look up.
Dragon quest 8, if you enjoy rpgs get this motherfucking game, it's awesome, even if it is alittle cutesy for my liking.
FFX and XII, can't say much on 12 as I haven't played it but what I've seen looks amazing. FFX best storyline in a rpg.
Star Ocean: Til the end of time, great game the first time round, for some reason it wasn't so good second time, still worth getting.
They're the only ones that came to mind, I'll probable think of more later. Oh and I wouldn't worry about the HDTV thing, when I was gonna get a Xbox 360 loads of know it alls told me that it was crap without HD, but that just isn't true at all, sure it's the same with the PS3.

Right now I'm in the process of buying a shitload of games for my ps2, only for the simple fact that I have the cash for a ps3...but I refuse to pay 600 bucks for a damn game system which doesn't even come with a free game lol.
So I'm just chillin, buying up the 'greatest' hits games that pop up or the ones that are released since there's many ps2 games I haven't played, Dark Cloud 2, Kingdom Hearts(played but not beaten), KH 2(same thing, brought it and playing it and loving it!).
Anyway I'd say stick with the ps2 since it's cheaper and still alot of freaking games that are out for it, unless you really want the ps3 right now and can't wait...me I'm a patient, cheap son of a dragon who can sweat it out another year and six months before the price of the ps3 falls to a reasonable one...
Me I haven't even played FFVII so I"ll be buying that as well as FFX and FFX2, so those three alone will keep my attention span for a long time....just get the darn ps2!!

Nothing Ballofire said is true. I've played both PS2 and PS1 games on my PS3 and without having to download backwards compatability updates or anything like that. They all work and without hassle. I did have to buy an adapater to put my old saves onto the PS3 but it wasn't terribly expensive.
The controllers are lightweight and all rechargable.
There are going to be about 10+ new games out by the end of March, too. Enchanted Arms is an RPG I know will be out by the end of March. I think there's 5 or 6 more RPGs slated to be out before year's end.
Oh and here's a screenshot from FFXIII;
And PS2, PS1 games look just like they do on PS2 as the PS3 contains the CPU and GPU from the PS2.
I think it's totally worth it, I personally love mine to death.

You forgot the Xenosaga series.

As long as you don't try to import one or anything weird like that. The European consoles don't have the Emotion Engine (PS2 chipset) and the Japanese consoles have had documented problems with backwards compatibility (not sure why, google it if you're interested).
EDIT: Waff forgot to mention that the screenshot he posted is a real-time shot, and not from a pre-rendered cutscene.

Actually I've never played any of the Xenosaga games.
The two games I really regret not getting are Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2. I so badly wanted to play those games but was just too embarrassed to go out and buy them, or even to ask for them for christmas or my birthday. A shame really.

Haha...everyone always says that. I was embarrassed about getting KH originally too, but it was so totally worth it, I swear man if you are an rpg fan you will not regreat getting those games.

Just wanted to add to this. Sony was supposed to release a chip that would ensure backwards compatibility. And they didn't. And they won't release it any time soon.
It was in a magazine and stuck to my head.
Anyways, I'm pretty pleased with my PS2. I say wait at least 3 more months, the price will usually go down and the game base should be a bit bigger.
@Sammah:
I'd do the same. I'd rather have lots of PS2 games, than a PS3 with absolutely no games to play. =\
That's coming from a European, because of the backwards compatibility stuff.
