Till this point, my old nVidia Geforce FX5200 (which came together with the PC) served it`s purpose well. I was able to run all the games smoothly at the default settings. But after trying to play Settlers 2 10th Anniversary and Half-Life 2: Episode One, I have come to the realisation that it`s about time my FX card goes into retirement.
But I have a problem. It has been a while since I have been up-to-date on news regarding graphics card development. So I have a bit outdated ideas as to what graphics card I should purchase. That is why I request for a bit of advice.
I am aiming for a mid-range AGP card. From the research I have done till this point, nVidia Geforce 6800GT is still a good choice. But I need to be sure since I don`t exactly have money to throw.

Graphics cards are a dicy battle to go with. First, are you sure you run AGP?
Secondly, if your aboslutely sure, go for a card company you know and trust. nVidia, in your case, and then pretty much pick one that does what you need it to do. Thats about all I can say >.>

If HL1 is crashing on you it migth not be the Card. Superior systems are crashing while underpowered still run it, its all in the dice if your comp can handle it.

Gohan: You just told me everything...except what I need to know. I know what I`m aiming for but I need specific models.
Garlic Jr: Half-Life 2: Episode One doesn`t crash on me. The problem is that some objects are invisible, some debris has purple lines and, as you advance forward, the structure turns from floor and walls into objects, consisting of red and black squares.

Buy a 100~150$ card? I suggest a Geforce 7XXX. I got a 7600 GT for 150$ last october.
Im gonna upgrade to a DX10 card once Age of Conan(DX10 mmorpg) comes out later this year. 8)

7600GT seems like a good choice. Thanks a lot, VJ.
Good luck with the DX10. I hear DX10 cards are preety expensive at the moment.

Age of Conan is going to be awesome.
I would only buy Vista for its DX10 features, so I wont get it untill conan is released. In the same way, I won't get a DX10 card untill then, which is around october.
That's always the best with computer hardware anyway: Only upgrade when you have to, and preferrably as late as possible.

FX5200 is my card as well. And HL: Episode 1 runs perfectly, none of the problems you say you have. Try updating the drivers, and if it doesn't work, go in the nVidia Control Panel, 3D settings, Custom 3D settings, and set VSync to Force Off. It worked for me for HL2 : Episode 1 (I had the same problems until I did that) and Fifa 2005/6/7.

Is that so? Ok, I`ll give it a try. Thanks for the tip.

Be sure to tell me if it works.
And I doubt it's the Graphics card. Why? Because I can run STALKER on my system with that card. o.o On high even.

I`m afraid it didn`t work. My brother updated the drivers while VSync was already set to Force Off. No result, I`m afraid.
Wait a minute...STALKER is out already? I really have to see that.

Oh, so it`s in beta. Is it good?
And by the way, I have solved my Half Life 2 Episode One problem. It seems a lot of textures and similar wasn`t working properly. An update fixed the matter.

VJ is right. I bought just a simple 7300 for only $70 something and I can run Oblivion, HL2, CS:S, etc.

Well, if you tell me a way to send money outside the borders, I'm buying a Graphics Card. But I can't send outside, so I can't buy a GC either. :\
